Sargassum is a brown, free-floating seaweed common in temperate and tropical oceans.

This summer, it has overwhelmed shorelines along the East Coast of the United States, Gulf of Mexico, and the Caribbean. Researchers believe the influx is caused by rising surface water temperatures and nutrients dumped into the ocean from farming and deforestation around the world.
