VIDEO - USA - KENTUCKY: Louisville Veteran Turns Shipping Container Into Hydroponic Farm

Alex Durham - Reporter

LOUISVILLE, Ky.

Falls City Farms is one of the newest and smallest farms in Louisville.

The hydroponic farm is completely operated out of a shipping container that sits off Spring Street in the Irish Hill neighborhood.

The container is 40 feet long and 320 square feet. It can grow up to three acres vertically and hydroponically.

"Everything is the same as traditional farming except we remove the dirt," said owner, John Miller. "Dirt takes up 70 to 80% of the nutrients that the plant needs, so by removing it, you let the plant eat what it wants and discharge what it doesn't."

Miller said their lettuce, herbs and leafy greens are fresh and nutrient-dense.

Inside the farm, the plants get only what they need from the sun to flourish. Miller said they provide only red and blue wavelengths through state-of-the-art LED lights.
