Farming in the city is happening at Chicago's Altgeld Gardens on the city's Far South Side.Young people are planting and growing the vegetables to bring produce to a food desert. Bowen Harvest has a big shipping container on South Ellis Avenue. There's a farm inside, where impressive amounts of produce are being grown.

Researchers from the University of Essex will try to grow onions outside traditional soil-based methods – inside a bright pink shipping container. A new partnership between the university and onion supplier Stourgarden will trial the technique to explore making the onion production process more environmentally friendly.

Rahe of Sunshine Farms have two shipping containers on site and most of their produce is grown vertically, but it all starts with the nursery. “Every one of these containers has 288 pods in them,” Rahe said. “We put them in the nursery for one week with the humidity domes on them,” he said.

Based in Boston, Freight Farms supplies farmers in 41 countries worldwide with a freight container so they can grow food inside it instead of on large swaths of land. "These shipping containers … they end up either in the ocean or in some junk yard, and so what we're able to do with Freight Farms is use these containers," Carpenter explained.

Square Roots, a controlled environment agriculture (CEA) startup, recently introduced a groundbreaking program supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The program aims to demonstrate the feasibility of removing light from commercial indoor vertical farming by utilizing gene-edited (CRISPR) plants that grow heterotrophically. These plants can add biomass through carbon uptake from acetate in irrigation water, enabling growth “in the dark,” in an indoor vertical farm.

FeedMore has two indoor, vertical hydroponic container farms, all to help with food insecurity. The two facilities are about 40 feet long, creating another resource for neighbors in need.

Community-supported agriculture programs boomed during the pandemic, but the seeds were cultivated decades beforehand.

The second thing I would do is call the CEO of Musk’s ‘The Boring Company, and the CEO of Freight Farms. Just eleven years ago Freight Farms began installing a hydroponic farm inside a standard freight container. It just happens that a freight container will fit inside The Boring Company’s tunnel that is 12 feet in diameter.
