BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – A farm in the Eau Gallie Arts District? Yes, it exists and it’s being cultivated by a group of students in kindergarten to 8th grade as part of their school curriculum.
The Verdi EcoSchool is an urban farm school that uses real world experiences to create context for traditional academic subjects: chemistry and biology through plant science, physics and math through building/ construction, history through art and reading/writing through entrepreneurship.
“Our team of educators uses the Eau Gallie Arts District as our campus and students travel to different classrooms throughout the day thanks to incredible partnerships we have made within the community,” said Founder Ayana Verdi.
“We visit the Foosaner Art Museum, Codecraft Lab, the Rossetter House Museum, Eau Gallie Civic Center, Eau Gallie Library and the Indian River Lagoon weekly as part of our immersive program.”
Students begin their day with Yoga/mindfulness, spend their mornings on the farm and end their day with Capoeira, a rhythmic Brazilian martial art.
“Every day is filled with problems to solve and authentic experiences designed to reinforce learning,” said Verdi.
The Verdi EcoSchool’s mission is to educate children for an entrepreneurial future through an immersive, hands-on learning environment steeped in nature, sustainability, science and the arts.
“Our student-led philosophy will inspire and empower the next generation of creative leaders and innovative thinkers,” said Verdi.
