Investments have been made in geothermal direct use in a rural area of Western Turkey helping to establish drying facilities, greenhouse operations, and local district heating.

Geothermal investments of around $10 million have been made in Sindirgi, a region in Western Turkey between Izmir and Bursa. The investment helped set up a drying facility, soilless greenhouses, infrastructure works, and first and second heating center investments that were brought to the district with the 23-kilometer main pipe transmission line from the Hisaralan region.

One of the projects that Sindirgi Mayor Ekrem Yavasin attaches importance to is geothermal energy investments. The geothermal transported to the town from 23 kilometers in Yavas, Hisaralan; together with the investments made in the soilless greenhouse, drying facility, and district heating established.

As a result of the works started in 2009, 5,000 residences are heated with geothermal brought to the district with the 23-kilometer main pipe transmission line. With the investments made in geothermal energy, new employment areas are provided in the district. Mayor Yavas said, “We have also established our second heating center in order to increase the number of residences heated by geothermal and to provide comfortable heating in every region. We completed the studies and started experimenting. With the new region, the number of residences heated with geothermal energy in our district has reached approximately 5,000.” said.

With the cooperation of the Ministry of Industry and Technology, GMKA, Balikesir Metropolitan Municipality and Sindirgi Municipality, the region’s first Geothermal Vegetable and Fruit Drying facility started operating in Sindirgi. It is aimed to extend the shelf life of vegetables and fruits grown in the region by drying them in this facility and to be sold at any time of the year. It is stated that the 1,000 square meter sample Geothermal Greenhouse project is also about to be completed.
