Annual Awards Program Recognizes Innovation In Agricultural & Food Technologies Around The Globe

Data helps us to understand the relationships between the physiology of plants and their response to environmental variables at a level that has not been possible before - Jon Friedman, Co-founder and COO, Freight Farms

Freight Farms, the world's leading manufacturer of container farming, today announced it has been awarded “IoT Monitoring Solution of the Year” in the 2022 AgTech Breakthrough Awards conducted by AgTech Breakthrough, a leading market intelligence organization that recognizes the top companies, technologies, and products in the global agricultural and food technology markets today.

Farmhand® is Freight Farms’ IoT farm automation software and is the only software of its kind. Farmhand allows indoor farm operators to control temperature, lighting, and other environmental variables in their farms by connecting to in-farm sensors. Farmhand is flexibly architected so that many different indoor grow setups (beyond Freight Farms’ container farms) can be operated using the software.

The IoT software is able to interact with different controllers, sensors, modules, HVAC units, lighting systems, and cameras. It allows for both monitoring and controlling different indoor farming systems, so that data from these setups can be fed back to operators to improve operational and plant performance.

Among farmhand’s distinct and unique offerings is a feature that visualizes the entire crop planning and planting process. It automatically performs any necessary calculations, then adapts farm modes to tailor the environment to those crops. It also provides analytics that aggregate sensor data to identify trends from previous harvests to optimize future ones, as well as providing crop growing “recipes” that are ever-improving based on data from farmers.

Importantly, farmhand enables production of higher quality, more flavorful, and more nutritious produce by dialing in specific environmental settings to replicate an ideal climate for plants to thrive. The “recipes” feature takes the guesswork out of this by preloading the ideal temperature, nutrient, CO2, humidity, and light settings for growing different plants into the software, which operators can select based on what they are growing.

“We’re thrilled to receive this recognition from AgTech Breakthrough. We set out to streamline day-to-day farm operations and demystify the process of growing healthy plants. Data helps us to understand the relationships between the physiology of plants and their response to environmental variables at a level that has not been possible before,” said Freight Farms co-founder and COO Jon Friedman. “Farmhand is always learning, evolving, and optimizing with the data analysis feature. This allows farmers to constantly cultivate higher yields and improve the flavor of their crops so they can grow the highest quality fresh produce in their area.”

The software is already being used in non-Freight Farms spaces, and is expected to rapidly expand to other farm technology platforms.

The mission of the annual AgTech Breakthrough Awards program is to conduct the industry’s most comprehensive analysis and evaluation of agricultural and food technology categories, including Internet-of-Things (IoT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) based agricultural technologies, farm management, indoor farming, food quality, data analytics and many more. This year's program attracted more than 1,600 nominations from over 15 different countries throughout the world.

“Cultivation management and control software have never been combined to offer a fully integrated indoor farm management software. Operators need to be able to make the most informed decisions for their farms and have the ability to draw out specific characteristics that they want to see in their crops,” said Bryan Vaughn, Managing Director, AgTech Breakthrough. “Farmhand is the ultimate farm automation software that offers unprecedented access and allows you to maximize farm performance, implement expert guidance, and get complete transparency into all farm operations. Congratulations on winning ‘IoT Monitoring Solution of the Year.’”
