US (NM): NMSU To Host Aquaponics Workshop In Albuquerque - November 2, 2019

New Mexico State University’s Extension, in collaboration with Santa Fe Community College and Sanctuary at ABQ, is hosting an introduction to aquaponics workshop from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 2, at the Bernalillo County Extension 4-H Building, 1500 Menaul Blvd NW in Albuquerque

The increasing awareness of limited land and water resources, coupled with an interest and desire to grow food sustainably, has led people across the country, and here in New Mexico, to look more closely at aquaponics as a strategy to address these issues.

Aquaponics is an integrated food production system that combines aquaculture, the cultivation of aquatic animals, and hydroponics, the growing of plants without soil, in a recirculating system.

New Mexico State University’s Extension, in collaboration with Santa Fe Community College and Sanctuary at ABQ, is hosting an introduction to aquaponics workshop from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 2, at the Bernalillo County Extension 4-H Building, 1500 Menaul Blvd NW in Albuquerque.

Registration is $40, lunch will be provided. Payment is due by Oct. 25.

Register online here or call 505-243-1386

The workshop is limited to 60 people. A waiting list will be available.

“This workshop will teach people how to set up an aquaponics system, how to grow fish and plants, and the importance of water quality, as well as permits, safety and other unique aspects of an aquaponics growing system,” said John Garlisch, NMSU Extension agricultural agent in Bernalillo County. “A tour of an aquaponics greenhouse will be included.”

Workshop presenters will be Rossana Sallenave, NMSU Extension aquatic ecology specialist; Charlie Shultz, lead faculty in the aquaponics and controlled environmental agriculture program at Santa Fe Community College, and Pedro Cordero Casas, an instructor in the aquaponics program at Santa Fe Community College.

“The fish and plants are cultivated together in a recirculating ecosystem that utilizes natural nitrogen-fixing bacteria to convert fish/aquatic animal waste into plant nutrients,” Sallenave said. “The waste products of the aquaculture system serve as nutrients for the hydroponic system.”

With such a combined recirculating system, there is no need to discard any water, and plants obtain most of their required nutrients without the need of added fertilizers, making it both sustainable and environmentally friendly.

Aquaponics systems require only about one-tenth of the water that would normally be used in traditional agriculture, making such systems particularly attractive in water-scarce regions of the country, such as New Mexico.

“There has been an increased interest in aquaponics in New Mexico,” Sallenave said. “This workshop will provide the participants with a good overview of aquaponics as well as the necessary information that they need to consider prior to undertaking this method of agriculture.”

The afternoon portion of the workshop will include a tour of Sanctuary at ABQ’s greenhouse and aquaponics system, led by its director, Danny Lilly. In addition, there will be demonstrations on how to build a system and how to monitor water quality.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — The fourth annual Greenhouse and Indoor Hydroponics Workshop will be from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 5 on the Purdue University campus.

The workshop, which is sponsored by Purdue Extension, Purdue’s Department of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture and the Indiana State Department of Agriculture, will focus on teaching attendees about hydroponic production technology.

Lori Jolly-Brown, who is serves as the Extension events and communications coordinator for the horticulture and landscape architecture department, said the morning session of the workshop will focus on how to get started in hydroponics, where to purchase and find materials, how to fertilize plants, ways to keep bugs away and a wide variety of other topics.

After lunch, Jolly-Brown said, attendees will have the chance to tour one of Purdue’s state-of-the-art greenhouses and indoor hydroponic facilities, while also having the opportunity to participate in hands-on activities.

Jolly-Brown said individuals will be able to interact with workshop organizer Krishna Nemali, a Purdue assistant professor and a controlled environment agriculture Extension specialist.

“They will get to see Nemali’s hydroponic research and vertical farming displays,” Jolly-Brown said.

Jolly-Brown said the workshop is geared toward commercial producers and growers, those just getting started in hydroponics, as well as those who are involved in hydroponics production technology as a hobby.

Greece: Hydroponic Workshops Launched In Corfu

Hydro Fresh Produce Announces The Launch of

Hydroponic Workshops In sunny Corfu, Greece

The workshops will take place at their hydroponic farm in central Corfu, Greece. The farm is located just 5 km from Corfu International Airport and 7km from the historic UNESCO city centre. Accommodation is available just a five minute walk from the farm or select your own.

The workshops last four days and will cover everything from setting up the system, implementation, maintenance, crop types, water and nutrient management and much more. The course will provide all of the information required to enable anyone to start their own hydroponic production, whether on a small scale at home for the family, or on a larger commercial basis. The official launch date for the workshops is Tuesday 4th of June 2019.

Ivor de Lloyd of Hydro Fresh Produce Corfu says about the project that it "started with yet another 'Ivor, don’t even think about it!' And here we are – 3 years into it and proving them wrong yet again.

"Hydro Fresh Produce hydroponic farm is a logical addition to my culinary career. How many chefs can say they grow their own greens, not to mention using innovative technologies? We supply local shops and taverns with the freshest produce in Corfu. If you choose the right restaurant, your salad will still have been growing this morning!

"Now, the next step. Hydroponic Workshops right here in beautiful Corfu.

"Enjoy the beauty of Corfu on a holiday with something extra…

“Learn how Hydroponics works and gain the knowledge to do it yourself!"

Hydro Fresh Corfu believe that this is a valuable addition to the thriving eco/agri-tourism movement and is aimed at individuals, couples or groups interested in learning about hydroponic production, with a view to setting up themselves.

WUR Hosts International Workshop On Vertical Farming

October 13-15, 2019 | Wageningen

VertiFarm2019, an international workshop on vertical farming, on 13-15 October in Wageningen, the Netherlands, combines a number of oral presentations of world leading horticultural researchers, panel discussions with renowned companies as well as short oral and poster presentations on the latest research results on vertical farming, also called indoor farming or plant factories with artificial light (PFAL).

The workshop welcomes scientific presentations on all aspects of vertical farming, ranging from plant physiology, breeding, climate control, engineering, systems design, urban planning, economics, consumer demands and business development. Although at this moment vertical farming largely deals with vegetables, there are also opportunities for production of ornamental (young) plants. Therefore, the workshop also welcomes presentations on ornamentals in vertical farms.

This workshop is open to everyone who is interested in vertical farming. "We expect that a nice mix of researchers, advisors and private companies will participate and that it will be a good place not only for hearing the latest knowledge on vertical farming, but also for networking", the convenors say.

There are also excellent opportunities for sponsoring the workshop.

Keynote speakers include: Bruce Bugbee, Erik Runkle, Eri Hayashi, Emiel Wubben, Luuk Graamans, Qichang Yang, Marie-Christine van Labeke, Danny Geelen, Francesco Orsini, Murat Kacira.

Panel discussion include persons from Aerofarms, 808Factory, Urban Farms Global, Infarm, Own Greens, Philips Lighting, Heliospectra, Osram, Grodan and more to be announced soon.
