The Global food system is at a critical stage and made worse by the COVID-19 pandemic.  As many as 265 million people are threatened by famine, up 50% from last year. 700 million suffer from chronic hunger and 2 billion more from malnutrition, with obesity and associated diet-related diseases increasing in all regions. During the height of the pandemic with lockdowns, we have witnessed the collapse of the global food system with reports of food producers resorting to dumping their produce.  The food crisis faced during the pandemic is a wake-up call for both developed and developing countries of the looming crisis facing the world when the next major crisis hits us, be it climate change, pandemics, etc.

The Global Food Security & Sustainability

Although the world has progressed significantly in terms of technological advancements in food production, food is not distributed in an equitable manner to regions, countries, households, and individuals. Government policies, availability of investments, and technological know-how including access to food supplies are key issues to meet the urgent food needs of the world’s growing population.  New and innovative farming technologies such as high-tech agriculture and aquaculture methods that produce more yields inland and urban conditions offer hope for the future.

The Global Food Security & Sustainability Virtual Summit 2021 held on 17 September 2021, would be one of the most important events ever held to address the critical issues of food security from the local to the global level, and from an interdisciplinary and systemic food systems perspective. The summit will invite multi-stakeholders from governmental organizations, private sector businesses, and NGOs to address the current disruptions and possible solutions on the world food supply chain.  Discussions will also include issues surrounding sustainability issues and how societies and businesses can design more sustainable solutions in their entire food chain to minimize impact to the environment and reduce food waste.

Advancing Indoor Farming In Asia – Intelligent Growth Solutions Ltd - Interview

Ahead of the virtual Asia-Pacific Agri-Food Innovation Summit, we caught up with David Farquhar, CEO at IGS about advancing indoor farming systems in Asia, new projects on the horizon, and working with governments to scale up controlled environment agriculture.

Ahead of the virtual Asia-Pacific Agri-Food Innovation Summit, we caught up with David Farquhar, CEO at IGS about advancing indoor farming systems in Asia, new projects on the horizon, and working with governments to scale up controlled environment agriculture.

FIND OUT MORE

David Farquhar, CEO, IGS

What role can indoor farming play in delivering greater sustainability and resilience to Asia’s urban food systems, especially post-COVID?

The resilience of food supply chains has been tested to the limit throughout 2020 in the wake of COVID-19 and has brought very quickly to the fore the food security challenges Asia and most other regions will face with climate change.  Now is the time to be focusing very clearly on local (urban and peri-urban) food production to ensure greater self-sufficiency and less reliance on imports. Greater adoption of agricultural technologies is imperative to ensure optimum use of available space, be it urban, industrial or uncultivatable land, all of these are spaces that can be used to introduce more indoor farming methods. As part of the agricultural ecosystem, this will deliver a far more controlled and sustainable method for producing fresh, homegrown crops, probably amounting to something like 25-30% of a fully balanced diet.

Does the APAC market offer particular opportunities or challenges for scaling urban/indoor farming, compared to other global markets? What particular projects is IGS excited about in this region? What progress has already been made?

Asia-Pacific has a very different climate across its expanse, which makes it hard to compare easily with other regions. The population in these regions is significant and growing substantially which puts food security very high on the agenda, highlighting the importance of finding new ways to produce and complement the existing agricultural ecosystem. In addition to growing populations, land and water scarcity are also becoming significant in certain geographies and this makes indoor farming – which requires a much smaller footprint and utilizes a fraction of the water typically required to produce crops – a very interesting proposition. This has led to some exciting collaborations between commercial and government bodies. For example, in Singapore and Hong Kong, where land is very scarce and expensive, there is a demand for alternative options of producing food. The appetite for indoor and alternative growing methods is highlighted in Singapore’s 30 by 30 initiative, aiming to reduce import reliance and expand food self-sustainability.

In terms of exciting projects, we are delighted to be working with Eden Towers (https://eden-towers.com/) a very ambitious new entrant to the national and regional food chains that are re-localizing across APAC. Based in Jakarta and privately financed, they have major plans for regional expansion with sites planned already in Singapore, Australia, and Indonesia. The first location will be Perth, Western Australia, and the initial farm is under manufacture for imminent deployment. This is what we believe to be the first of many in this region. We are in advanced discussions across the APAC region with existing growers and other prospects and are currently trialing a range of crops specific to the cuisine and tastes of the population. These are progressing very well in our system and producing some very tasty results. We have other customers in the pipeline with projects in Singapore, India, and Polynesia.

What partnerships and collaborations are needed to scale controlled environment agriculture in Asia? What types of organizations are you keen to connect with at the Asia-Pacific Agri-Food Innovation Summit in November?

In this wider region, we recognize the important role that governments more broadly have to play in supporting and driving the food security and sustainability agenda. In Singapore for example we have talked closely with the Economic and Development Board (EDB) and the Singapore Food Agency (SFA), who are aiming to draw investment, research, and development into Singapore-based companies.

At November’s event, we hope to connect with existing and established growers, as well as entrepreneurs looking to set up farms or expend their existing horticulture operations. We also welcome further interaction with the EDB and SFA, as well as those operating in real estate and commercial property investment.

Finally, we are keen to identify regional sources of investment capital and asset finance on behalf of our customers seeking to establish agri-tech operations.

What key insights will you be looking out for personally at the summit?

I am very interested to know what emphasis is being put on clear and open data-driven discussions about payback timescales from investment in agri-food technologies. We know that there are technologies with varying approaches, sizes, and challenges to address, but ultimately these solutions need to be sustainable, scalable, and operationally reliable. However, they need to be commercially sound and that is something I am very keen to discuss further.

Join David online at the virtual Asia-Pacific Agri-Food Innovation Summit and watch his panel debate on ‘Success Factors for Scaling Vertical Farming Operations’ on November 19.

The U.S. produce industry meets

The Fresh Summit is the event where all the players from the American produce industry come together. This year, the fair takes place as a virtual event, which has the advantage that it is thus accessible to a large audience. After all, it is cheaper to register someone for a virtual event than to have them fly over for an event. Moreover, it saves time, given that it only takes a few hours to tour the virtual stands, as opposed to strolling around a fair for two full days.

JASA presents innovative and sustainable packaging solutions

With over 35 years of experience, JASA became a market leader in packaging for the produce industry. And that's what the company will show at the fair. From its booth, JASA will showcase its revolutionary packaging solutions, including our state-of-the-art Sleever and award-winning Bag-2-Paper™. These innovative packaging solutions are prime solutions for plastic-free packaging, and ideal for high-speed packaging of tomatoes, avocados, apples, kiwis, citrus, and more.

Your reliable partner for complete packaging lines

JASA will also provide information about complete packaging lines at its stand. Whether you are looking for a horizontal packaging line or a vertical packaging line, JASA can handle your complete packaging solution. JASA's packaging lines are flexible: you can easily switch between different sizes, packaging, and packaging materials. Also, JASA's packaging machines have a hygienic design, making them easy and quick to clean. The machines are also easy to use and maintain. And as a system integrator, JASA takes full ownership of your entire weighing and packaging process!

 JASA goes live

JASA is a family business with a personal and open approach. This will also be reflected in our virtual booth. JASA will give live demonstrations of the equipment and show many photos and videos of the packaging machines and JASA's packaging solutions. Visitors to the stand will discover all there is to know about weighing and packaging equipment for leafy greens, tomatoes, fresh-cut fruits, and vegetables. Through the live chat feature, visitors can ask questions or have a chat. You can also admire JASA's Sleeve packaging for tomatoes at the fresh ideas showcase.

JASA looks forward to welcoming

all PMA attendees to her virtual booth.

Scottish Response To Global Food Security Profiled At UAE Summit

REPRESENTING IGS, the Scottish-based agritech business, CEO David Farquhar traveled to Abu Dhabi this week to attend the prestigious invitation-only 2020 Milken Institute Middle East and Africa (MEA) Summit

14th February 2020

David Farquhar, CEO IGS

REPRESENTING IGS, the Scottish-based agritech business, CEO David Farquhar traveled to Abu Dhabi this week to attend the prestigious invitation-only 2020 Milken Institute Middle East and Africa (MEA) Summit.

IGS supplies highly sophisticated plug-and-play vertical growing technology to indoor farms to enable the efficient production of food in any location around the world. The innovative Total Controlled Environment technology is capable of delivering yields of 225% and labor savings of up to 80% compared to glasshouse production, and energy savings of 50% in comparison to other indoor growing environments.

David was one of more than 100 speakers at the event and joined a panel of experts for a session focusing on how global food producers can scale up supply to ensure we can sustain the projected global population of 9 billion by 2050. David highlighted the potential of vertical farming, as well as the challenges still faced by the sector and the importance of increasing its credibility as we seek to help seriously address food sustainability and security.

During the event, he spoke alongside guests including United Arab Emirates Minister of State for Food Security Her Excellency Mariam Al-Muhairi, Chairman and CEO of Fresh Del Monte Produce, Mohammad Abu-Ghazaleh, and His Royal Highness Prince Khaled bin Alwaleed bin Talal Al Saud, Founder and CEO of KBW Ventures.

David commented: “It was an honour to receive the invitation to attend this remarkable summit and to represent Scottish innovation on a global stage, where such vital discussions are taking place. It is no secret that the global population is rising at an unprecedented rate and our ability to grow healthy food reliably under mounting pressure. It is vital that we act now to ensure that we are putting systems in place and adapt our behaviours to develop a sustainable route forward.

“This was a hugely exciting opportunity for IGS to join some of the most influential people in the world to profile our platform and met other people with bright ideas. It is essential that we talk honestly about the role of technology in agricultural development and the opportunities provided by vertical farming to exist alongside traditional agriculture for future generations.”

The annual summit is now in its third year and brought together a carefully curated group of more than 1,000 interdisciplinary thought leaders and decision-makers to address global topics including food security, trade, capital markets, financial inclusion, job creation, gender parity and more.

As Korea welcomes Asean for a special summit in Busan today and tomorrow, the state-backed Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (Kotra) is hosting four trade fairs and conferences on the sidelines to showcase the latest technologies from Korean companies and their cooperative efforts with Asean.

The group of 10 countries has increasingly grown in importance as a major trading partner for Korea since a free trade deal went into effect in 2007.

According to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, Korea exported $100.3 billion worth of products to Asean in 2018, compared to just $41.0 billion in 2009. In fact, taken as a trading bloc, Asean was Korea’s second-largest trading partner last year.

Korea’s efforts to court the group have also picked up under President Moon Jae-in’s New Southern Policy that seeks to improve relations with the group to diversify from Korea’s traditional trade reliance on China and the United States.

At the Busan Exhibition & Convention Center (Bexco), Kotra will offer its ideas for a more collaborative future with Southeast Asia through the Asean-Republic of Korea Innovation Showcase, Invest Asean, Multilateral Development Bank Project Plaza and Smart City Fair.

Innovating with Asean

At the Asean-Korea Innovation Showcase, 45 companies will display technology and projects that is being developed with Asean in four areas: mobility, lifestyle and health care, agriculture and environment and energy sectors.

Automakers such as Hyundai Motor and Renault Samsung Motors will take the stage in the mobility section with six other companies to show off their efforts to develop the sector in collaboration with their Asean-based partners.

Amid Korea’s recent bet into hydrogen technology, Kotra will feature fuel-cell electric vehicles (FCEV) at the fair, including motorcycles and auto rickshaws equipped with the technology as an example of how such vehicles could roll out in the Asean market.

Hyundai Motor’s booth will display its efforts to push FCEVs into the Indonesian and Bruneian markets and its vision of an eco-friendly Asean auto market.

Renault Samsung Motors will showcase its project to deploy its two-seater electric micro car Twizy in Asean.

It currently manufactures the miniature vehicle at its Busan plant.

Korea’s IT heavyweights, including Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics, will be present in the Smart Life section of the show.

Samsung Electronics will showcase its smart home appliances, while LG Electronics and LG U+ will display Internet of Things products designed for the office using the superfast 5G network.

KT will also be present at the show.

The company is currently looking to deploy its 5G network technology in Asean, with support from the Korean Ministry of Science and ICT.
In the Future Environment and Energy corner of the fair, 16 companies will showcase environmentally-friendly smart grid systems and energy storage systems.

Social venture Tree Planet will share its efforts to develop an eco-friendly coffee farm in Indonesia.

Seoul-based Rosign will showcase its road pavement material targeted for the Vietnamese market at the show. The company has created a joint venture with Vietnam’s Bidico and is expected to establish a manufacturing plant in the country next year.

In the Smart Farming section, 13 companies will show off the newest agricultural technologies, including LS Mtron’s small-sized tractor geared exclusively for Southeast Asia.

Start-up Sherpa Space will also offer visitors a chance to taste its specially-bred strawberries that are grown in container farms at the fair.

Smart cities

After Asean launched the Asean Smart Cities Network last year, interest has surged in smart city technology that attempts to connect urban infrastructure through a wider network.

Kotra expects its Smart City Fair to serve as a platform to connect Korean and Asean companies.

Thailand’s Digital Economy Promotion Agency and Surbana Jurong, a Singaporean consulting agency, will hold sessions to explain their projects at the conference.

According to Kotra, 27 companies and institutions from Asean seeking smart city partners and 130 Korean companies will be present at the conference.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport will host the main smart city event at Bexco, the Asean-Republic of Korea Smart City Fair 2019.

The fair, which runs until Wednesday, will host a total of 21 countries including the 10 Asean members and will have 220 booths from 119 smart-city-related companies.

Korea will exhibit its own efforts to develop smart city technology.

Sejong and Busan are currently designated as two of Korea’s smart city test beds. The government plans to incorporate artificial intelligence to introduce a self-driving shuttle service and emergency-response drones in Sejong.

Busan is currently working toward creating a combined control center for planned robot services, such as parking robots and medical centers that utilize robot assistance.

The government has committed 26.5 billion won ($22.5 million) into smart city projects pursued by state-backed institutions this year.

Asean and beyond

Korean companies have aggressively expanded into Asean in recent years.

According to Korea’s Ministry of Economy and Finance, the number of newly registered Korean companies in Asean stood at 1,292 last year compared to 850 in 2014.

Kotra expects the Invest Asean event at Bexco to help provide more investment opportunities in the region as 75 investment agencies and related institutions from Asean countries will attend the event.

Each Asean country will have its own investment booth to share information to Korean companies. There will also be separate sessions on investment opportunities.

Foreign direct investment (FDI) in Asean has swiftly grown to $155 billion in 2018, accounting for 11.9 percent of total global FDI that year, from just $21.8 billion in 2000.

The region is also Korea’s top market for overseas infrastructure orders, at $11.9 billion last year.

Meanwhile, Kotra will host the seventh Multilateral Development Bank Project Plaza 2019, which will provide information for companies to win global infrastructure projects led by development banks.

The annual event, which has run since 2013, will host the World Bank, Asian Development Bank, Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, Central American Bank for Economic Integration and Inter-American Development Bank.

The projects will focus beyond Asean and into Africa and Central and South America.

VIDEO: Talking Fresh Summit And Indoor Farming Companies

Carlson, a 30-year veteran of PMA expos, said one thing that caught his eye was the growth of indoor farming companies at the show

by Tom Karst

October 28, 2019

The Packer’s Tom Karst visits with Craig Carlson of Carlson Produce Consulting Oct. 25 about the just-concluded 2019 Produce Marketing Association’s Fresh Summit.

Carlson, a 30-year veteran of PMA expos, said one thing that caught his eye was the growth of indoor farming companies at the show. Those firms are capitalizing on the appeal of local produce relative to metropolitan regions, and emphasizing the operations use less water, less land and less fuel than traditional farming operations. What does the future hold for indoor farming companies?

“They are really checking a lot of boxes that I think is exciting,” Carlson said. “My concern about this is that most everybody is throwing money at the same idea,” he said, noting that indoor companies may need to expand their range beyond leafy greens.

Seeds&Chips Global Food Innovation Summit 2019: Sparking Change

The fifth edition of the Seeds&Chips Global Food Innovation Summit May 6-9, 2019 will gather a community of entrepreneurs, innovators, policymakers, leaders, and activists that push for a sustainable future in food and agriculture. Food Tank President Danielle Nierenberg will participate in the summit, held in Milan, Italy, to inspire solutions for feeding the future.

The summit will gather speakers tasked with inspiring attendees to do more for a sustainable food future. Award-winning actor and activist Alec Baldwin will talk about feeding the world and reducing environmental impacts in a keynote presentation. Innovators like Fabrice DeClerck, Science Director at EAT & Bioversity International, and Thomas King, founder and CEO of Food Frontier, will discuss optimizing foodtech sector. Amongst many special guests, HRH Princess Viktória de Bourbon de Parme and Olusegum Obasanjo, Former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, will highlight opportunities for sustainable development and agriculture around the world.

On May 6, Danielle will participate in the Opening Ceremony and the session “Hand Made Tale: The Innovative Women Solving Our Global Food Challenges” with women like Susan Rockefeller, Board Member of the Stone Barns Center for Food and Agriculture and Angeline Achariya, CEO of Monash Food Innovation Centre. Danielle will discuss collaborations in the foodtech sector at “Common Ground: Synergy and Solutions for the Next Food System” on May 7, alongside innovative business executives. In the May 8 session “The Food Fight: podcast debates on the food system’s biggest challenges,” hosted by EIT Food, Danielle will explore whether producers or consumers should be responsible for ensuring people eat healthy food with nutritionists and CEOs alike.

Food Tank’s Francesca Tabor will judge the Sustainable Snacking Pitch Competition, co-hosted by Mondelēz International and Seeds&Chips, on May 6. The pitch competition will gather start-ups and entrepreneurs to share their innovative solutions in not only alternative snacks and ingredients, but also food waste reduction, sustainable packaging, sustainable sourcing, responsible supply chain practices, and more. Competition winners, selected by SnackFutures, Seeds&Chips, and Food Tank, will gain access to Mondelēz’s innovation acceleration workshops which will allow Mondelēz teams to help refine the solution’s concepts.

On May 7, Food Tank, Mondelēz International, and Seeds&Chips will co-host an evening panel event at Carlo e Camilla, in Segheria, a renowned restaurant reinventing conviviality around the dinner table. On the backdrop of hors d’oeuvres specially designed by chefs Carlo Cracco and Luca Pedata, Danielle will discuss Mondelēz’s new innovation hub for creating a sustainable food system—SnackFutures—with Brigette Wolf, Head of SnackFutures. Then, Danielle will invite Danielle Gould, founder of Food + Tech Connect and co-CEO of Alpha Food Labs, and Pashon Murray, founder of Detroit Dirt, on stage to talk about the contributions companies play in food and sustainability.

Seeds&Chips will debut a new discussion series “It’s Time for Africa,” focusing on Africa’s potential in growing a sustainable and inclusive economy—and a model for development across the world. Danielle will participate in the inaugural series on May 7 at the session “Bridging the Gap between Surplus and Scarcity: Opportunities of Food Innovation,” offering insight on the opportunities food innovation offers for social and economic development in Africa.

As part of its mission to create a better food system for future generations, the summit will feature food innovators as young as 13 years old on each of the over 30 sessions. With the pressure of the rising population, increasing number of hungry people, and arriving climate change impacts, the young innovators will offer new directions and innovative solutions to sustainably feed everyone.

Over 300 speakers throughout the event will contribute their solutions to improve precision agriculture, traceability, artificial intelligence, investment, open innovation, and more. Exhibitors will include companies and innovations from every part of the food system, ranging from Agtools, data services to help farmers maximize their farms and buyers understand product availability, to Redefine Meat, a 3-D printing plant-based beef company.

 Seeds&Chips 2019

The Fifth Edition of The Global Summit Showcases International Expansion

Kicking off on May 6 at Rho FieraMilano, the next edition will welcome world renowned guests, hundreds of speakers, and conference sessions discussing food, innovation, and the planet’s most pressing challenges.

In 2019, Seeds&Chips will also be a part of the Fancy Food Show in San Francisco (January 2019) and New York (June 2019)

Global goals: in September 2019, the first Australian edition of the Summit will take place in Melbourne, and plans are in the works for Africa and China

Milan, 9 October 2018 - The fifth edition of Seeds&Chips, The Global Food Innovation Summit, the most important international event dedicated to Food Innovation, was presented today, with the exceptional institutional support of the Lombardy Region

From the 39th floor of Palazzo Lombardia, the announcement of latest edition of the Summit was welcomed by consulates representing countries from all corners of the world: Ecuador, Uruguay, Slovenia, Turkey, Lebanon, Algeria, Tunisia, Brazil, USA, Australia, Romania, Kuwait, Latvia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Estonia, Lithuania, Israel, France, Mexico, the Netherlands, Peru, Argentina and Finland. The President of the Lombardy Region, Attilio Fontana, delivered a video message of greetings and thanks to the assembled audience, while onstage, speeches were delivered by Walid Haidar, Dean of the Consular Corps and Consul General of Lebanon in Milan; Marco Gualtieri, Founder and President of Seeds&Chips; Alessandro La Volpe, Vice President of IBM Cloud, and Alan Christian Rizzi, Undersecretary to the Presidency of the Lombardy Region responsible for relations with international delegations.

With this united front, the Region of Lombardy and Seeds&Chips demonstrated their unity to guiding the future of food system both in Italy and the world; indeed, with the city of Milan as the central point of the debate, this theme was the most important takeaway. Lombardy was the driving force behind Expo Milano 2015 and The Global Food Innovation Summit, born and bred in the region’s capital, is a testament to its legacy, its message and its global reach.

"It is a great privilege for us to receive the both support and concrete backing of the Region of Lombardy and to thus have a crucial partner to carry forward the legacy of Expo Milano 2015 - said Marco Gualtieri, Founder and Chairman of Seeds&Chips. For the first time, the world has placed a conversation about food at the center of an enormous matrix including the challenges linked to the growth of the world population, climate change, urbanization, and to a fundamental word for today and for the next decades: sustainability. I have always considered Expo to have been a huge success but, to be such, we must continue to carry forward those themes and all that they represent, never forgetting to keep both Milan and Italy in the center. In the same year that Expo took place, in New York the United Nations approved the Sustainable Development Goals for 2030 and in Paris almost all the countries of the world signed the Cop21 agreement to combat climate change.

Together, these milestones generated an epoch-defining transformation that crossed every economic sector, each united by the concept of sustainability and with food as the transversal and dominant factor. We created the first edition of Seeds&Chips with the knowledge that it was essential to represent and enhance this transformation as well as establishing three fundamental pillars: the presence and the real and practical involvement of young people including both Millennials and teenagers, the continuous research and presentation of solutions and new models, and a strong international identity. This fifth edition of Seeds&Chips will be a new starting point: much has been done, but much remains to be done ".

"Seeds&Chips has helped to maintain a healthy and articulate debate on the issues that emerged during Expo Milano 2015, thus representing the natural evolution of that first step”, added Alan Christian Rizzi, Undersecretary to the Presidency of the Lombardy Region with responsibility for relations with international delegations. “Food security and food safety, the fight against food waste, agricultural sustainability: these are issues that our regional government is determined to tackle with the urgency they deserve. An event like Seeds&Chips stimulates this discourse through the involvement of experts and authorities from all over the world. Lombardy is the largest agricultural region of Italy, and an area with a storied culinary tradition of food and wine, with dozens of certified products.

The growth and prosperity of the agri-food sector cannot, however, ignore elements such as innovation and research, which are now essential for competing in an increasingly fierce market. The combination of agri-food, research and business in Lombardy is very strong. One example is the High Technology Agrifood Lombardy Cluster, which creates synergies between major universities, large companies, SMEs and regional research institutions to explore the new possibilities of agritech and industry 4.0. Milan, the capital of the region, also hosts 10% of startups in the Italian food sector, with 8.5% located in or around Bergamo. These are the elements we want to enhance and develop.”

A GLOBAL VISION

Seeds&Chips 2019 will take place from 6 to 9 May at FieraMilano Rho, running concurrently with TUTTOFOOD. Over four days, the Summit will host conference sessions and meetings on the major topics related to food and innovation around the globe, from climate change to robotics, from e-commerce to precision agriculture, and from food waste to the circular economy, among many other themes. An exhibition hall will allow start-ups, companies, accelerators and incubators to present and showcase their projects, while hundreds of international speakers, investors and policy makers from all over the world will discuss major global challenges.

Following the success of the last edition’s WaterFirst! Call for Ideas, which gathered more than 65 projects from countries on 4 continents, a special focus will once again be placed on the theme of water, one of the biggest global challenges in the coming years.

The Global Food Innovation Summit recently announced their partnership with the Government of the State of Victoria and Food + Wine Victoria to create Seeds&Chips Australia in the city of Melbourne in September 2019. It will be an international event focused on innovation in agrifood, with the goal of becoming the standard bearer for food innovation not only in Australia, but throughout Southeast Asia. The event will feature sessions, debates, forums, workshops, business meetings and awards, to give a 360 ° view of food and innovation.

Seeds&Chips has already signed a three-year joint venture agreement with the Specialty Food Association, the American organization behind the Fancy Food Show, the oldest and most well-known American event dedicated solely to food. Beginning in 2018, Seeds&Chips will have a significant presence at the both the Winter Fancy Food Show in San Francisco and the Summer Fancy Food Show in New York. The next edition of the show takes place in San Francisco in January 2019, and in New York in June 2019.

The fifth edition of the Summit in Milan will welcome institutions, companies and startups from scores of countries around the world. Australia, Germany, Holland, Israel, San Marino and Slovenia are among the first confirmed for 2019.

In addition, several African countries as well as China will have an important part to play in the upcoming Summit. These regions are strategically vital in developing best practices related to environmental stability, innovation, and the global food chain. Seeds&Chips is also in talks with representatives of these regions to develop international agreements and working relationships.

MILLENNIALS AND GENERATION Z

As always, young people are the real heroes of Seeds&Chips. However, it is not only millennials but the emerging “Generation Z” of teenagers who have a vital role to play.  The fifth edition of the Summit will provide even more opportunities for engagement for young people and teens with a range of innovative formats and programs. Each conference will have at least one speaker at the under the age of 30 and will be opened by a Teenovator, activists from 13 to 19 years old who are particularly active in food innovation and the food revolution. Young innovators will also have the chance to participate in the Give Me 5! program, where they will meet with global leaders one on one for 5 minutes and propose their projects, ask questions, and gain inspiration for the future.
