The Global Food Security & Sustainability Virtual Summit 2021 , 17th September 2021
The food crisis faced during the pandemic is a wake-up call for both developed and developing countries of the looming crisis facing the world when the next major crisis hits us, be it climate change, pandemics, etc.
The Global food system is at a critical stage and made worse by the COVID-19 pandemic. As many as 265 million people are threatened by famine, up 50% from last year. 700 million suffer from chronic hunger and 2 billion more from malnutrition, with obesity and associated diet-related diseases increasing in all regions. During the height of the pandemic with lockdowns, we have witnessed the collapse of the global food system with reports of food producers resorting to dumping their produce. The food crisis faced during the pandemic is a wake-up call for both developed and developing countries of the looming crisis facing the world when the next major crisis hits us, be it climate change, pandemics, etc.

The Global Food Security & Sustainability
Although the world has progressed significantly in terms of technological advancements in food production, food is not distributed in an equitable manner to regions, countries, households, and individuals. Government policies, availability of investments, and technological know-how including access to food supplies are key issues to meet the urgent food needs of the world’s growing population. New and innovative farming technologies such as high-tech agriculture and aquaculture methods that produce more yields inland and urban conditions offer hope for the future.
The Global Food Security & Sustainability Virtual Summit 2021 held on 17 September 2021, would be one of the most important events ever held to address the critical issues of food security from the local to the global level, and from an interdisciplinary and systemic food systems perspective. The summit will invite multi-stakeholders from governmental organizations, private sector businesses, and NGOs to address the current disruptions and possible solutions on the world food supply chain. Discussions will also include issues surrounding sustainability issues and how societies and businesses can design more sustainable solutions in their entire food chain to minimize impact to the environment and reduce food waste.

Ahead of the virtual Asia-Pacific Agri-Food Innovation Summit, we caught up with David Farquhar, CEO at IGS about advancing indoor farming systems in Asia, new projects on the horizon, and working with governments to scale up controlled environment agriculture.
FIND OUT MORE
What role can indoor farming play in delivering greater sustainability and resilience to Asia’s urban food systems, especially post-COVID?
The resilience of food supply chains has been tested to the limit throughout 2020 in the wake of COVID-19 and has brought very quickly to the fore the food security challenges Asia and most other regions will face with climate change. Now is the time to be focusing very clearly on local (urban and peri-urban) food production to ensure greater self-sufficiency and less reliance on imports. Greater adoption of agricultural technologies is imperative to ensure optimum use of available space, be it urban, industrial or uncultivatable land, all of these are spaces that can be used to introduce more indoor farming methods. As part of the agricultural ecosystem, this will deliver a far more controlled and sustainable method for producing fresh, homegrown crops, probably amounting to something like 25-30% of a fully balanced diet.
Does the APAC market offer particular opportunities or challenges for scaling urban/indoor farming, compared to other global markets? What particular projects is IGS excited about in this region? What progress has already been made?
Asia-Pacific has a very different climate across its expanse, which makes it hard to compare easily with other regions. The population in these regions is significant and growing substantially which puts food security very high on the agenda, highlighting the importance of finding new ways to produce and complement the existing agricultural ecosystem. In addition to growing populations, land and water scarcity are also becoming significant in certain geographies and this makes indoor farming – which requires a much smaller footprint and utilizes a fraction of the water typically required to produce crops – a very interesting proposition. This has led to some exciting collaborations between commercial and government bodies. For example, in Singapore and Hong Kong, where land is very scarce and expensive, there is a demand for alternative options of producing food. The appetite for indoor and alternative growing methods is highlighted in Singapore’s 30 by 30 initiative, aiming to reduce import reliance and expand food self-sustainability.
In terms of exciting projects, we are delighted to be working with Eden Towers (https://eden-towers.com/) a very ambitious new entrant to the national and regional food chains that are re-localizing across APAC. Based in Jakarta and privately financed, they have major plans for regional expansion with sites planned already in Singapore, Australia, and Indonesia. The first location will be Perth, Western Australia, and the initial farm is under manufacture for imminent deployment. This is what we believe to be the first of many in this region. We are in advanced discussions across the APAC region with existing growers and other prospects and are currently trialing a range of crops specific to the cuisine and tastes of the population. These are progressing very well in our system and producing some very tasty results. We have other customers in the pipeline with projects in Singapore, India, and Polynesia.
What partnerships and collaborations are needed to scale controlled environment agriculture in Asia? What types of organizations are you keen to connect with at the Asia-Pacific Agri-Food Innovation Summit in November?
In this wider region, we recognize the important role that governments more broadly have to play in supporting and driving the food security and sustainability agenda. In Singapore for example we have talked closely with the Economic and Development Board (EDB) and the Singapore Food Agency (SFA), who are aiming to draw investment, research, and development into Singapore-based companies.
At November’s event, we hope to connect with existing and established growers, as well as entrepreneurs looking to set up farms or expend their existing horticulture operations. We also welcome further interaction with the EDB and SFA, as well as those operating in real estate and commercial property investment.
Finally, we are keen to identify regional sources of investment capital and asset finance on behalf of our customers seeking to establish agri-tech operations.
What key insights will you be looking out for personally at the summit?
I am very interested to know what emphasis is being put on clear and open data-driven discussions about payback timescales from investment in agri-food technologies. We know that there are technologies with varying approaches, sizes, and challenges to address, but ultimately these solutions need to be sustainable, scalable, and operationally reliable. However, they need to be commercially sound and that is something I am very keen to discuss further.

This year, the fair takes place as a virtual event, which has the advantage that it is thus accessible to a large audience. After all, it is cheaper to register someone for a virtual event than to have them fly over for an event. Moreover, it saves time, given that it only takes a few hours to tour the virtual stands, as opposed to strolling around a fair for two full days.
JASA presents innovative and sustainable packaging solutions
With over 35 years of experience, JASA became a market leader in packaging for the produce industry. And that's what the company will show at the fair. From its booth, JASA will showcase its revolutionary packaging solutions, including our state-of-the-art Sleever and award-winning Bag-2-Paper™. These innovative packaging solutions are prime solutions for plastic-free packaging, and ideal for high-speed packaging of tomatoes, avocados, apples, kiwis, citrus, and more.
Your reliable partner for complete packaging lines
JASA will also provide information about complete packaging lines at its stand. Whether you are looking for a horizontal packaging line or a vertical packaging line, JASA can handle your complete packaging solution. JASA's packaging lines are flexible: you can easily switch between different sizes, packaging, and packaging materials. Also, JASA's packaging machines have a hygienic design, making them easy and quick to clean. The machines are also easy to use and maintain. And as a system integrator, JASA takes full ownership of your entire weighing and packaging process!
JASA goes live
JASA is a family business with a personal and open approach. This will also be reflected in our virtual booth. JASA will give live demonstrations of the equipment and show many photos and videos of the packaging machines and JASA's packaging solutions. Visitors to the stand will discover all there is to know about weighing and packaging equipment for leafy greens, tomatoes, fresh-cut fruits, and vegetables. Through the live chat feature, visitors can ask questions or have a chat. You can also admire JASA's Sleeve packaging for tomatoes at the fresh ideas showcase.
JASA looks forward to welcoming
all PMA attendees to her virtual booth.

A Host of Events On The Sidelines Encourage
Investment And Growth
November 25, 2019
As Korea welcomes Asean for a special summit in Busan today and tomorrow, the state-backed Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (Kotra) is hosting four trade fairs and conferences on the sidelines to showcase the latest technologies from Korean companies and their cooperative efforts with Asean.
The group of 10 countries has increasingly grown in importance as a major trading partner for Korea since a free trade deal went into effect in 2007.
According to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, Korea exported $100.3 billion worth of products to Asean in 2018, compared to just $41.0 billion in 2009. In fact, taken as a trading bloc, Asean was Korea’s second-largest trading partner last year.
Korea’s efforts to court the group have also picked up under President Moon Jae-in’s New Southern Policy that seeks to improve relations with the group to diversify from Korea’s traditional trade reliance on China and the United States.
At the Busan Exhibition & Convention Center (Bexco), Kotra will offer its ideas for a more collaborative future with Southeast Asia through the Asean-Republic of Korea Innovation Showcase, Invest Asean, Multilateral Development Bank Project Plaza and Smart City Fair.
Innovating with Asean
At the Asean-Korea Innovation Showcase, 45 companies will display technology and projects that is being developed with Asean in four areas: mobility, lifestyle and health care, agriculture and environment and energy sectors.
Automakers such as Hyundai Motor and Renault Samsung Motors will take the stage in the mobility section with six other companies to show off their efforts to develop the sector in collaboration with their Asean-based partners.
Amid Korea’s recent bet into hydrogen technology, Kotra will feature fuel-cell electric vehicles (FCEV) at the fair, including motorcycles and auto rickshaws equipped with the technology as an example of how such vehicles could roll out in the Asean market.
Hyundai Motor’s booth will display its efforts to push FCEVs into the Indonesian and Bruneian markets and its vision of an eco-friendly Asean auto market.
Renault Samsung Motors will showcase its project to deploy its two-seater electric micro car Twizy in Asean.
It currently manufactures the miniature vehicle at its Busan plant.
Korea’s IT heavyweights, including Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics, will be present in the Smart Life section of the show.
Samsung Electronics will showcase its smart home appliances, while LG Electronics and LG U+ will display Internet of Things products designed for the office using the superfast 5G network.
KT will also be present at the show.
The company is currently looking to deploy its 5G network technology in Asean, with support from the Korean Ministry of Science and ICT.
In the Future Environment and Energy corner of the fair, 16 companies will showcase environmentally-friendly smart grid systems and energy storage systems.
Social venture Tree Planet will share its efforts to develop an eco-friendly coffee farm in Indonesia.
Seoul-based Rosign will showcase its road pavement material targeted for the Vietnamese market at the show. The company has created a joint venture with Vietnam’s Bidico and is expected to establish a manufacturing plant in the country next year.
In the Smart Farming section, 13 companies will show off the newest agricultural technologies, including LS Mtron’s small-sized tractor geared exclusively for Southeast Asia.
Start-up Sherpa Space will also offer visitors a chance to taste its specially-bred strawberries that are grown in container farms at the fair.
Smart cities
After Asean launched the Asean Smart Cities Network last year, interest has surged in smart city technology that attempts to connect urban infrastructure through a wider network.
Kotra expects its Smart City Fair to serve as a platform to connect Korean and Asean companies.
Thailand’s Digital Economy Promotion Agency and Surbana Jurong, a Singaporean consulting agency, will hold sessions to explain their projects at the conference.
According to Kotra, 27 companies and institutions from Asean seeking smart city partners and 130 Korean companies will be present at the conference.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport will host the main smart city event at Bexco, the Asean-Republic of Korea Smart City Fair 2019.
The fair, which runs until Wednesday, will host a total of 21 countries including the 10 Asean members and will have 220 booths from 119 smart-city-related companies.
Korea will exhibit its own efforts to develop smart city technology.
Sejong and Busan are currently designated as two of Korea’s smart city test beds. The government plans to incorporate artificial intelligence to introduce a self-driving shuttle service and emergency-response drones in Sejong.
Busan is currently working toward creating a combined control center for planned robot services, such as parking robots and medical centers that utilize robot assistance.
The government has committed 26.5 billion won ($22.5 million) into smart city projects pursued by state-backed institutions this year.
Asean and beyond
Korean companies have aggressively expanded into Asean in recent years.
According to Korea’s Ministry of Economy and Finance, the number of newly registered Korean companies in Asean stood at 1,292 last year compared to 850 in 2014.
Kotra expects the Invest Asean event at Bexco to help provide more investment opportunities in the region as 75 investment agencies and related institutions from Asean countries will attend the event.
Each Asean country will have its own investment booth to share information to Korean companies. There will also be separate sessions on investment opportunities.
Foreign direct investment (FDI) in Asean has swiftly grown to $155 billion in 2018, accounting for 11.9 percent of total global FDI that year, from just $21.8 billion in 2000.
The region is also Korea’s top market for overseas infrastructure orders, at $11.9 billion last year.
Meanwhile, Kotra will host the seventh Multilateral Development Bank Project Plaza 2019, which will provide information for companies to win global infrastructure projects led by development banks.
The annual event, which has run since 2013, will host the World Bank, Asian Development Bank, Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, Central American Bank for Economic Integration and Inter-American Development Bank.
The projects will focus beyond Asean and into Africa and Central and South America.

VIDEO: Talking Fresh Summit And Indoor Farming Companies
Carlson, a 30-year veteran of PMA expos, said one thing that caught his eye was the growth of indoor farming companies at the show
by Tom Karst
October 28, 2019
The Packer’s Tom Karst visits with Craig Carlson of Carlson Produce Consulting Oct. 25 about the just-concluded 2019 Produce Marketing Association’s Fresh Summit.
Carlson, a 30-year veteran of PMA expos, said one thing that caught his eye was the growth of indoor farming companies at the show. Those firms are capitalizing on the appeal of local produce relative to metropolitan regions, and emphasizing the operations use less water, less land and less fuel than traditional farming operations. What does the future hold for indoor farming companies?
“They are really checking a lot of boxes that I think is exciting,” Carlson said. “My concern about this is that most everybody is throwing money at the same idea,” he said, noting that indoor companies may need to expand their range beyond leafy greens.
