Emirates Flight Catering to build vertical farming facility in Dubai

Vertical farming is already underway in Dubai, with Caterer Middle East last year visiting Badia Farms in the Al Quoz area who are currently supplying to F&B establishments in the city.

Gillian Hamburger, senior vice president – programming at Expo 2020 Dubai, said: “With 50 million meals expected to be served during Expo 2020, both quality and sustainability are crucial to our aim of creating an exceptional – and delicious – World Expo, while also contributing to a more sustainable future for us all. Cultivate '19 is a wrap

The ninetieth edition of the trade show was one of the biggest ones in the last years and expectations are this is not to change for the next edition

Automation, Biological Crop Control And Mobile Accessibility

Booths are broken down, bags are packed and cars, airplanes and other means of transport have left Columbus. Cultivate '19 is a wrap. The ninetieth edition of the trade show was one of the biggest ones in the last years and expectations are this is not to change for the next edition.

With conditions being favorable for plant growers, the atmosphere at the show was good and that pleased the suppliers - even though some noticed a lesser amount of vegetable and cannabis growers made the trip to Columbus. Still, many suppliers, especially providing biological crop protection for these crops, made it to the show and weren't displeased: the demand for solutions and for knowledge is high and so was the interest.

Feeding your beneficials during the start-up of the population! That can be done with this new Biobee product.

The team with Bluelab showing their Pulse Meter, making it possible to measure the root zone.

Labour and automation
Like for other growers in the industry, labour, more specifically skilled labour, is an issue amongst potted plant growers and investing in solutions for this is of high relevance.

Also LED lights were all over the show - although not as many as earlier this year on GreenTech, where it seemed to be a disco party every now and then. Amongst technical suppliers, accessibility of data found in the greenhouses is an important topic and many more launched solutions to provide better insight and mobile applications for their platforms.

The BioSafe team launched an application making it possible to control your irrigation system remote and on mobile devices. More to follow...

Paul Jaeger and Daphne Brogdon with Micro Grow Systems, showing their MicroCool solutions and sharing insights on creating the best climate in various crops.

Paul Jaeger and Daphne Brogdon with Micro Grow Systems, showing their MicroCool solutions and sharing insights on creating the best climate in various crops.

Water quality
Then there's water quality. If it's minuscule bubbles added to the irrigation water, solutions for fertilisation or biostimulants to be added to the water - it all could be found at the trade show this year.

Curious to see what solutions we're talking about more specifically? Keep an eye out for Friday's publication, when we'll release our photo report.

Hemp Fibre-Reinforced Plastic, Hemp Protein Powder And Hemp Face Cream Are “Hemp Products of the Year 2019”

nova-Institut GmbH (www.nova-institute.eu)

Hürth, 6 June 2019

With more than 410 participants from 49 countries and a sold-out exhibition, the conference has broken all records and is now by far the world's largest event for the industrial use of hemp

For the second time, the innovation award “Hemp Product of the Year” has been granted to the young, innovative hemp industry for finding suitable applications and markets for industrial hemp-based products.

After a 10-minute presentation from each of the nominated companies, the three award winners were chosen by the expert audience at the “16th EIHA Hemp Conference”, 5 – 6 June 2019 in Cologne, Germany (www.eiha-conference.org). The six nominees were previously selected by a jury from a total of 30 submissions.

Visuals, German version and PDF file available at http://nova-institute.eu/press/?id=125

With more than 410 participants from 49 countries and a sold-out exhibition, the conference has broken all records and is now by far the world’s largest event for the industrial use of hemp. Practically all companies active worldwide in the field of hemp fibres and shives, hemp seeds and oil and cannabidiol (CBD) meet once a year in Cologne to discuss the latest developments, to strengthen business relationships and create new ones.
The demand for hemp products, especially food, cosmetics and CBD, is growing worldwide. In Europe, a record area of 50,000 ha will be cultivated this year. In Canada the goal is to reach a turnover of 1 billion Canadian dollars by the year 2023 and in the USA Kentucky is entering hemp cultivation with big plans: “Make Hemp Great Again”. As for China, a large hemp textile industry is currently emerging.

Continuous innovation is one of the most important drivers of the hemp industry. Therefore, the innovation award “Hemp Product of the Year 2019” plays a very special role. This year, the innovation award was sponsored by HempFlax, the leading hemp company from the Netherlands, and awarded together with the nova-Institute. Michael Carus, managing director of the nova-Institute, was enthusiastic: “This year’s winners not only convince hemp enthusiasts, they also illustrate the broad spectrum of the hemp plant: Hemp fibre-reinforced plastic for trolleys and lightweight construction, high-quality hemp protein in previously unmatched purity and a face cream that combines the advantages of hemp oil and CBD for facial care”.

The winners in detail:

1st place: Trifilon AB (SE) – Trifilon BioLite Trolley Case made of PP Hemp Fibre
With BioLite, Trifilon offers a green alternative to plastics. BioLite is a polypropylene reinforced with 30% hemp fibres. Hemp is one of the strongest natural fibres in the world, which makes BioLite products strong, light and durable. The use of hemp fibres in BioLite optimises the material properties for many applications – the high-quality trolley case is just one example. This technology gives manufacturers the opportunity to make sensible use of renewable raw materials, and an excellent one is hemp. The new material is suitable for lightweight automotive construction and consumer goods.

2nd place: BAFA Neu GmbH (DE): Absolute HempProtein
The innovative hemp protein powder contains over 70% complete protein. It has a nutty taste and white colour. It has a creamy texture, is mixable with liquids and it doesn’t contain insoluble fibre fractions. The hemp protein powder is naturally white which ensures great bright colours in shakes when mixed with fresh fruit such as strawberries, raspberries or mango. This product is 100% natural and is also available in a certified organic version. Hemp protein powder is an ideal protein supplement for athletic vegetarians and vegans. It is allergen free and a complete protein.

3rd place: Hemptouch d.o.o. (SI): Hemptouch Balancing Face Cream
Hemptouch Balancing Face Cream is a first ever skin care product formulated with a unique trilogy of industrial hemp extracts such as hemp hydrolate, Cannabidiol (CBD) and hemp seed oil. This innovative face cream combats blemished and acne-prone skin, one of the biggest segments in skin care industry. It brings a brand-new approach to the fight against acne and oily skin, proving that hemp is a powerful alternative to over the counter medicine. Hemp hydrolate has antimicrobial properties, visibly tightens pores and smooths skin texture. CBD extract helps to control excess oil production which prevents blemishes and purifies acne-prone skin. Hemp seed oil with its nurturing omega acids restores healthy-looking radiance. This cream is dermatologically tested, proven to reduce the secretion of sebum.

The nova-Institute would like to acknowledge HempFlax (NL) for sponsoring the renowned innovation award “Hemp Product of the Year”. Agropro (LT), GenCanna Global (US), MH medical hemp (DE) and Hempro (DE) have been supporting the conference as Gold Sponsors, Fundación CANNA (ES) and Gilson International B.V. Germany (DE) as Silver Sponsors and Canah International (RO) as Bronze Sponsor. BAFA Neu (DE) sponsored the hemp beer.

The House of The Future: Super-Sustainable With Room to Grow Your Food

The house and garden of the future is sustainable and produces its own food. Photo: supplied

MELISSA HEAGNEY SENIOR JOURNALIST

MAR 3, 2019

The phrase “house of the future” may,  at first, provoke images of cartoon family The Jetsons with sky-high homes, flying cars and robot servants.

But according to the experts, the reality is much more sustainable and green. And it’s already here.

One display at the upcoming Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show will feature a range of sustainable builders’ ideas and products linked to the house and garden of the future.

Future homes are set to be highly sustainable, have minimal impact on the land and produce enough fresh food to feed several adults over a year, according to participant Brendan Condon.

Mr Condon is director of three sustainability companies including gardening outfit Biofilta, and part of an award-winning deep-green development The Cape at Cape Patterson in South Gippsland.

Homes can and will have minimal impact on the land around it. Photo: Supplied

“We’re showing people can harness design and breakthrough technology that is already being used on houses around the world,” Mr Condon said.

He said sustainability was a must for the future of big cities like Melbourne and Sydney, especially when it comes to living a healthy and comfortable life.

“Suburbia now needs to become the new nature,” he said.

“Cities have huge opportunities to combine rainwater or rooftop rainwater runoff, waste stream organics like composted food waste and surplus city spaces with clever urban farming systems to grow huge amounts of fresh produce.”

Mr Condon said a new gardening system would be launched at the show to demonstrate to people that they could grow food anywhere.

Biofilta recently partnered with a local coffee company to set up pop-up farms in two car spaces in Rocklea Drive, Port Melbourne.

The aim is to grow over 300 kilograms of fresh food in over a year using used coffee grounds and chaff. They have already produced 180 kilograms of food in four months.

Gardens can be grown anywhere – including rooftops and car parks. Photo: Supplied

Mr Condon said there were opportunities to turn urban areas and high-rise blocks into environments for not only food production but also other types of biodiversity.

That included setting up areas of wetlands which would encourage frogs and insects to find a home in urban areas. More plants offering shading would also help with the urban heat island effect.

As well as food production, the house and garden of the future will also use solar energy and solar batteries to produce more power than they need. This could power electric cars – even if not actual flying cars promised by The Jetsons.

Director of modular home group Ecoliv Building Ashley Beaumont agreed, saying sustainable home design was now at a point where heating and cooling appliances were minimally used.

Passive solar design – using the sun to heat and cool homes – meant power bills would be massively reduced.

Mr Condon said this could be by as much as $2500 every year where efficient, all-electric appliances were used.

“Climate-adapted, resilient, comfortable homes powered by renewable energy with super-low energy bills, coupled with productive urban farming, are definitely the future,” Mr Condon said.

This trend is rapidly growing, motivated by the need to shorten the food supply chain and the increasing attention to high-quality products. A research conducted by the Coop Italia Observatory shows that in 2017, for the first time, ready-to-eat products in Italy reached the top 3 positions regarding the consumption of packaged fresh products sold by the GDO. Italy ranks second in Europe, after England, for the per capita consumption of these products.

The horticulture market will be just one of the topics that will be presented during Novelfarm. A growing interest for medicinal and pharmaceutical plants, whose return allows investments to be made in plants in "useful" times. An example? Cannabis, which is now also legal for personal use (even if with important limits of active ingredients). Technology will be the protagonist showing (by LED) how light can affect the taste and consistency of salads and strawberries.

Novel Farm will, therefore, be the first B2B event in Southern Europe that will offer professional updating and networking on these topics, the possibility of comparison and meeting between supply and demand. The new event dedicated to new production methods was presented last June 12 in an exceptional context: GreenTech, the global meeting in Amsterdam, a reference point for horticulture technology. What is Novel Farm born from? The roots have grown in AquaFarm, the conference & exhibition dedicated to aquaculture, algaculture and sustainable fishing, through conferences and an area dedicated to the techniques of aquaponics and vertical farming.

In the last two years, the collaboration and the guests have been important: the Association for Vertical Farming, the international association that lead the sustainable growth and develop the vertical farming movement; Vertical Farming Italian and ENEA; Dickson Despommier, the creator of the vertical farming concept as keynote speaker and the participation of important companies as Osram, Planthive, Idromeccanica Lucchini, Wasp.

Finally, the fully equipped conference rooms and the success of the exhibiting companies led NovelFarm to be the exclusive event for the most innovative production companies and future soilless cultivation scenarios.

Novelfarm will be held in conjunction with Aquafarm.

GreenTech Amsterdam 2018 The Organic Farmers Fair In The Spotlight

GreenTech Amsterdam 2018 The Organic Farmers Fair In The Spotlight

GreenTech Amsterdam 2018: The Organic Farmers Fair in the spotlight

  •  01 May 2018  |  GreenTech

With over 450 exhibitors, global market leaders and innovators, GreenTech Amsterdam offers a comprehensive range of horticultural technology. The exhibition – which is 20% bigger than in 2016 – provides a platform for greenhouse builders, (vertical) horticulture suppliers, machine companies, soil & substrate producers, lighting partners and seed suppliers.

New this year is The Organic Farmers Fair (TOFF) that spotlights innovations and knowledge of organic agricultural technology and was organized together with IFOAM, FIBL, and their five partners - Bejo, DCM, Steketee, Koppert Biological Systems and Delphy – and with Wageningen University & Research as a supporting partner. TOFF is the international meeting place for organic growers as well as conventional farmers considering switching to organic. GreenTech and TOFF will take place from 12 - 14 June 2018 at RAI Amsterdam Convention Centre, the Netherlands.

Organic production is booming
Consumers increasingly value organically grown products; the global market has grown steadily for decades by an average of some 10% per year, to a current level of 100 billion euros. Interest in organic farming is also rising among farmers and horticulturalists due to the expanding market, the good pricing for products and thanks to the solutions this holistic approach offers for soil fertility, non-chemical weed control and the management of diseases and pests.

TOFF in detail – programme, and range
Knowledge sharing in the TOFF theatres plays an important role in this edition. There the audience can participate in various sessions that discuss the most relevant themes in the field of organic farming. GreenTech will feature speakers including:

  • Darko Znaor and Martien Lankester (Avalon) will present the results of a recent study into true cost accounting for organic farming in comparison to conventional production in the Netherlands. Does switching to organic farming really generate more money if you also take the environmental and health costs into account?
  • Wijnand Sukkel (WUR) will present the results of and insights provided by multi-year research conducted in the Dutch province of Flevoland. Which advantages does strip cultivation offer with respect to crop resilience, yield, and quality? To what extent can this be put into practice by large-scale, professional companies?
  • Panel discussion: experts from Bejo, FIBL and other organizations provide their opinion: which techniques should you allow in vegetable seed breeding or not and why? A hot topic in agriculture, politics and definitely also in the organic sector.
  • Leonard Mol (Steketee) will discuss Precision weed control and the utility and effect of precision hoeing.
  • Koppert Biological systems, Biobest, DCM and knowledge institutions such as WUR and the University of Amsterdam will provide a status update on the latest developments in the field of organic crop protection.
  • Organisations such as FIBL, Bionext, and LBI will share their insights into the conservation and improvement of soil fertility; one of agriculture’s biggest long-term challenges.
  • TOFF On tour - Daily field trips will be organized to Bejo Zaden, Lepelaar Biodynamic Farm Shop, and Huiberts Organic Flowerbulbs. For more details: www.greentech.nl/toff/visiting/
