A headliner event at the October 4-5, 2021 edition of the premier trade show and conference for the indoor | vertical farming industry at the Hilton Orlando, Lo’s discussion will focus on Sensei Ag’s form factor agnostic approach to building and expanding indoor farms.

Tapped to head Sensei Ag in 2020, Sonia brings more than 32 years of combined agriculture, technology, and business experience to her leadership role. Lo began her career in technology, building her first tech venture as CEO of eZokaGroup, a UK-based internet startup that she sold in 2002. From Chalsys, Lo became the Director of Localization and Global Content for Google, Inc.
Most recently, Ms. Lo was CEO of Crop One Holdings, Inc., a vertical farming company that owns a vertical farm in Massachusetts. Crop One is also part of a joint venture with Emirates Flight Catering in Dubai which is building one of the world’s largest vertical farms.

'Growing In Space' Panel Joins May 18-20, 2020
Las Vegas Educational Line-Up
'GROWING IN SPACE' PANEL TOUCHES DOWN AT MAY 2020 EDITION OF INDOOR AG-CON LAS VEGAS
Dr. Joel Cuello will moderate "Growing In Space With Help From Industry, Academia and Government," on Wednesday, May 20 during Indoor Ag-Con Las Vegas.
Ahead of his panel, Cuello has shared a blog post observing that while the world’s space programs were instrumental in spinning off vertical farming, today’s vertical farming industry will likely enable NASA - and other space programs - to realize their future food production systems on the Moon, Mars and beyond.
As Cuello writes, "Just as Elon Musk’s Space X, Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin and Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic have partnered with NASA to innovate on and advance space transportation, it is highly likely that partnerships with NASA for the design and operation of its future Lunar and Martian space farms will be brokered with the likes of AeroFarms, Plenty, Bowery Farming, CropOne Holdings, Gotham Greens, 80 Acres Farms, BrightFarms, AEssense, Seven Steps to Heaven and/or other indoor farming companies, some of which have yet to be formed."

Vertical Farms Attracting Greater Interest And Investments In The GCC
#UAE | 28 NOVEMBER, 2018
One of the GCC countries leading this change is the UAE
Dubai: A growing importance is being given to vertical farming, among other Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA) methods across the GCC and is generating interest and increased investments from regional and overseas players. According to Orbis Research, the MEA vertical farming market is expected to reach USD 1.21 billion by 2021 at a CAGR of 26.4% from only USD 0.38 billion in 2016.
One of the GCC countries leading this change is the UAE, which has upcoming projects facilitated by the government as well as private players to help increase food security in the region. These include the UAE Ministry of Climate Change and Environment allotting space for 12 vertical farms to be built by Shalimar Biotech Industries, and the world’s largest vertical farm for Emirates Airlines by Crop One Holdings Inc. With around 90 per cent of food being imported in the UAE, territorial problems of water scarcity and small percentages of arable land, vertical farming is becoming increasingly vital to ensure food security within the region.
H.E. Mariam Al Mehiri, Minister of Future Food Security and a leading campaigner of urban farming plans to create a ‘Food Valley’ or a technology hub, dedicated to the development of food and farming automation. The Food Valley, and other government-led initiatives, are being introduced to attract and enable a new generation of farmers to help build future sustainability.
Commenting in a recent interview with euronews, the Minister said “[The idea] comes from the Silicon Valley in the United States, where you have technologies, or start-ups, sprouting and developing into commercial giants.” explains the Minister. “We want to bring this to the UAE and build a Food Valley that’s all about food technologies.”
The Middle East and Africa: A prime location for CEA to successfully take off.
By capitalizing on vertical space, and controlling the environment for year-round optimal growth, CEA can produce significantly more yields per square foot than traditional agriculture, while using only a fraction of the water.
AgraME 2019 is once again creating a platform for the latest technology to be showcased to the regional agribusiness market, along with promoting knowledge sharing between leaders in the global industry and key local players around urban farming techniques and methods.
Henry Gordon-Smith, Founder and Managing Director of Agritecture and an acknowledged global thought leader in urban agriculture, stated that the Middle East has an unprecedented ability to reshape critical infrastructure that supports modern human life; “The potential is certainly there to transform what has historically been a relatively small traditional farming industry into perhaps the most technologically advanced agriculture industry in the world. This means economic development, increased production of nutritious local produce, and lowered food costs, all with minimal water consumption and increased resilience to climate change and foreign markets” said Gordon-Smith who will be speaking at the AgraME Conference in March.
Commenting on the Middle East market, Bob Hunsche, Sales Manager, Van der Hoeven said; “We are really starting to see the horticulture industry take off in the Middle East. We have just completed the largest greenhouse project in the UAE (11 ha). With the most advanced technology in terms of climate and humidity control, the facility is expected to locally produce 3,000 tonnes of tomatoes year-round with the aim of helping the UAE become more self-sufficient in its food production. AgraME 2018 was a great event and we are really looking forward to connecting with more projects at the 2019 show!”
Samantha Bleasby, Exhibition Director of AgraME said, “With the aim of increasing food security in the Middle East and attaining the UN Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) of zero hunger, we are excited to present the industry with new technologies from around the globe and free-to-attend learning and networking opportunities that will increase productivity in the region with sustainable use of water and land resources”
The show is attracting key players in the CEA industry such as Certhon, Agrotonomy, Veggitech, Wuxi, iGrowths Technology Co. Ltd, Ozorganic Urban Farming LLP and Van der Hoeven.
Taking place from 5 – 7 March 2019 at the Dubai World Trade Centre, AgraME 2019 will bring to Dubai some of the leading innovators and urban farming experts to provide the industry with valuable information and knowledge.

Does Indoor Farming Hold The Key To The Global Food And Nutrition Challenge? Indoor Farming Visionaries Gather For Major Summit In New York
Does Indoor Farming Hold The Key To The Global Food And Nutrition Challenge? Indoor Farming Visionaries Gather For Major Summit In New York
The world is on the cusp of a global agri-food revolution, powered by technology innovation. Globally, we face enormous challenges of water scarcity, hunger and malnutrition as the traditional food supply chain struggles to feed a population set to grow by more than a third by 2050. In the United States alone, the next 30 years will see the population swell by an enormous 112 million from its 328 million today. (Source: https://www.census.gov).
According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, there are just 60 harvests left before the world’s topsoil is completely depleted, after decades of chemical-heavy intensive farming and erosion through deforestation and global warming. By 2050, the amount of arable and productive land per person will be only a quarter of what it was in 1960.
Already, we have growing inner-city populations that lack access to affordable fresh food, with increasing malnutrition and obesity, the effects of which impact our communities and stress our health infrastructure.
This month, over 200 agribusiness leaders, entrepreneurs and investors from around the world will gather in New York to discuss how indoor farming offers a solution. At the indoor AgTech Innovation Summit on June 20-21, they will discuss the challenges that need to be met to build sustainable, profitable and healthy local and national food systems.
Serving as the summit’s Strategic Partner is Alexandria Real Estate Equities, Inc. (NYSE: ARE), the country’s leading owner, operator, and developer of collaborative life science, technology and AgTech campuses, and the company’s venture capital arm, Alexandria Venture Investments, which invests in cutting-edge AgTech companies. With its position at the forefront of emerging innovation in AgTech, Alexandria Venture Investments led a blue-chip investment syndicate to create the AgTech Accelerator, a unique start-up venture development fund focused on discovering and developing agricultural technology companies.
“Through our sustainable, vibrant environments and our strategic investments in agricultural innovation, we continue to support the next generation of companies and technologies that are essential to the growth of the AgTech sector,” said Joel S. Marcus, Executive Chairman and Founder of Alexandria Real Estate Equities, Inc./Alexandria Venture Investments, who will co-moderate the panel discussion Investor Debate: What Type of Capital Does This Sector Need to Grow. “We recognize the immense potential of indoor farming to benefit the health and well-being of the people in our communities and ultimately to help solve the critical challenges of global hunger and nutrition.”
Indoor farming’s precision systems create optimal growing conditions, delivering exactly the right amount of water, nutrients, and light directly to the plant, using up to 90% less water than traditional agriculture. Grown indoors in a controlled environment, with no need for pesticides or herbicides, the produce is as clean and organic as it’s possible to be.
Historically, the indoor sector has struggled with cost-efficiencies at scale, limiting its produce to a premium price-point. At last, breakthroughs in LED efficiencies, power optimization, AI and machine-learning are reducing costs and increasing yields, enabling indoor-grown produce to compete on price-point with traditional open field produce. The super-fresh locally-grown model is now within reach of being achievable on a massive scale, making healthy fresh food affordable to millions.
Brooklyn Borough President, Eric L. Adams will open the Indoor AgTech Innovation Summit with insights into how the indoor farming revolution is transforming New York’s thriving communities.
He is joined by leading innovators and operators from around the world, including AeroFarms, FreshBox Farms, Shenandoah Growers, Plenty, Infarm (Germany), Gotham Greens, Bright Farms, Square Roots, Bowery Farming, Badia Farms (UAE) and the Japan Plant Factory Association.
The summit will host senior representatives from the biggest names across agribusiness, food, and finance: Bayer, Monsanto, Cargill, Kelloggs, McCain, InVivo, US Foods, Barclays, Wells Fargo, Finistere Ventures and Tyson Ventures, alongside technology developers including IGS, Cornell CALS, Fluence, Motorleaf, Priva, OSRAM and Signify, with pitches from six agtech start-ups showcasing their breakthrough solutions.
This powerhouse audience will focus on best practice, defining growth opportunities and the need for collaboration in this fast-emerging precision ag sector.
The Indoor AgTech Innovation Summit is part of the World Agri-Tech Innovation Series of summits focused on international networking and deal-making for agribusinesses, solution providers, entrepreneurs and investors.

"Every Grower Needs To Be Truly Competitive In Order To Thrive "
Gert-Jan van Staalduinen of Logiqs B.V.
"Every Grower Needs To Be Truly Competitive In Order To Thrive "
With the GreenTech coming up in June we're getting in touch with several horticultural intellectuals, entrepreneurs, innovators and general greenhouse geeks. Today Gert-Jan van Staalduinen of Logiqs B.V. With their automated vertical farming system GreenCube they help growers optimize the use of resources.
What is your contribution to the advancement of the global horticulture industry?
We design and build sustainable and reliable automation – We strive to create logistics solutions that help our customers sustainably grow their businesses.
Helping growers produce more plants, achieve quality consistency and gain more control over their greenhouses. We don’t just automate for the sake of automation.
What would you say is the most important topic in horticulture at the moment?
Efficient use of resources (people, water, space) - because of globalization, a lot more growers do business internationally, and just about all local marketplaces have felt extra pressure. Every grower needs to be truly competitive in order to be able not just to survive, but to thrive in this new global marketplace. And that’s where automation can really make a difference.
What will you be doing at the GreenTech? Will you present any novelties during the trade show?
GreenCube – First introduced during the 2016 GreenTech, the GreenCube automated vertical farming system was met with a lot of enthusiasm by industry experts and we’ve been working hard ever since perfecting it and building the first few projects. So this year the GreenCube will once again be the focal point of the LOGIQS booth, and our team will be eagerly waiting to share the newest developments from the last two years.
What project that you’re currently involved in are you most proud of?
We are true believers that Vertical Farming can and will have a very positive impact on society. Moving towards pesticide-free food, requiring less water and producing vegetables with a much lower carbon footprint.
And we firmly think that in order for vertical farms to scale-up production volumes and be viable as businesses, they need to be automated. We’re very proud to be the provider of logistics automation equipment to a dynamic North American vertical farming start-up. Now already building the 2nd GreenCube facility, after their first trial project proved to be a huge success. We are very proud to be part of their ambitious plan to revolutionize the way food is grown.
How do you see the future of horticulture?
Because of the ever-increasing food needs due to worldwide population growth, Urban-Farming and Vertical-Farming will be more and more mainstream.
A.I. and deep learning algorithms - will start to play a bigger role in horticulture and agriculture and the gathering and processing of information will happen at a never before seen pace.
Better vision sorting systems that - will allow the software (A.I.) to automatically determine the perfect grow recipe for each plant.
Big data is coming to the greenhouse, and it’s coming fast!
Logiqs is to exhibit at the GreenTech exhibition June 12-13-14 in Amsterdam. The GreenTech summit will take place June 11th.
Publication date: 6/5/2018

Top Five Challenges of Container Farming
TOP 5 CHALLENGES OF CONTAINER FARMING
Virtually no aspect of indoor farming has caught the media’s attention like container farming. Stories of Kickstarters raising multimillion-dollar campaigns coupled with Millennials quitting their jobs and buying into container farms have created the perfect media narrative. In June of 2016, The Wall Street Journal went as far as to ask: “Are Shipping Containers the Future of Farming?”
There are many benefits to having container farms as an indoor farming option and the practice has encouraged many new farmers to join the industry. As our friends at Bright Agrotech (now Plenty Ag) explain in the video above, container farms can have up to 30 times the productivity per square feet of a traditional farm. There are, however, several challenges they can create for farmers.
Number 5 – Scalability
While container farms can be a great entry point into indoor agriculture because of their low startup costs, scaling an operation into many farms into a campus can be illogical for some farmers. At a larger scale, bigger buildings like a warehouse or greenhouse can be cheaper and easier to manage.
Number 4 – Durability
Although this is not the case for newly created, self-contained units, durability, and structural integrity can be a big challenge for container farming. With over 20 million shipping containers used per year, repurposing for sustainable farming seems like a great, environmentally friendly option. The challenge occurs when, by definition, used shipping containers are essentially at the end of their useful life. They are being sold because they can no longer be used by shippers to do what they were originally designed to do – ship products.
In addition to their age, they have lived a rough life. Over the years, they have been continually exposed to harsh and corrosive elements like sea water, road salt and intense UV rays. They have been moved from ships to trucks to stores and have been loaded and unloaded by crane off of boats at ports of call throughout the world.
Number 3 – Design
While the compact space of a shipping container makes a convenient small farm, the design inside a container can be a challenge. In addition to having confined areas that make it difficult to have more than a couple of people working at a time, you also face issues managing what makes plants thrive: airflow, heat, and space.
Since there is an incentive to pack plants as tightly as possible, plants often do not receive the space or airflow that they require to allow for maximum crop size. In addition, the tight spaces can lead to issues with LED lighting heat and lighting logistics. If the lights are placed too close to the plants, they burn. If they are too far away, they don’t receive sufficient light for healthy growth and if they’re placed unevenly, you will get an inconsistent crop. Any additions to LED lighting can increase temperatures to levels that can be less than ideal for your plants.
Number 2 – Marketed Output vs. Actual Output
WE RELEASE A NEW WHITE PAPER AT EACH OF OUR INDOOR AG-CON EVENTS, AND THIS ARTICLE IS BASED ON OUR WHITE PAPER ENTITLED “THE PROMISE AND PERILS OF CONTAINER FARMING”, RELEASED AT INDOOR AG-CON ASIA IN JANUARY 2018.
While you can grow an incredible amount of crops in a very small space, container farming has received criticism over the claims of exactly how much can be grown inside a container farm. Some suppliers have claimed very aggressive yields that may be difficult for farmers to recreate. Real-world outcomes can be very different based on many factors. These can include your crop mix, environmental conditions, growing choices, your local market and farmer experience.
Number 1 – Economics
One of the things that attract a lot of farmers to container farming is the low fixed cost of entry. As we mentioned earlier, however, is although your fixed costs can be low, in an older shipping container, your variable costs to maintain the structure can be much higher than a newer structure. In a “low cost” scenario you can also run into a lot of hidden costs such as regulatory, compliance or insurance issues. For example, if your customers require evidence that crops have been grown in facilities suitable for food production, you may incur a substantial amount of added costs. Add in factors that can influence profitability like land prices, utility costs, and local crop market conditions, it can be incredibly difficult to accurately forecast how much profit you can expect from a container farm.
Based on our research, we estimate that fewer than half of container farms are profitable. Although it depends on the size and market niche, profitability may not be the sole focus of someone operating a container farm.
