Stimulating Debate In Controlled Environment Agriculture - 18th March, 9:00 am – 5:00 pm

Can we really feed 40,000 people with a ‘SkyFarm’? Or will everyone in London have a ‘Personal Food Computer’ by 2040? These are the sorts of provocative questions being posed ahead of the upcoming Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA) conference being held on 18th March at the John Innes Centre

DESIGNED FOR THE FUTURE: STIMULATING DEBATE IN CONTROLLED ENVIRONMENT AGRICULTURE

Can we really feed 40,000 people with a ‘SkyFarm’? Or will everyone in London have a ‘Personal Food Computer’ by 2040? These are the sorts of provocative questions being posed ahead of the upcoming Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA) conference being held on 18th March at the John Innes Centre.

The event is hosted by Agri-TechE, a business-focused membership organization that is supporting the growth of a vibrant agri-tech cluster of innovative farmers, food producers and processors, scientists, technologists, and entrepreneurs.

Matt Millington, of Method Strategic Design Studio, is a speaker at the event. He comments: “Humans only evolve when they are pushed to. There are technological advances that can contribute to making urban farming a wider reality, but more importantly, there are drivers: climate change, soil degradation, urbanization…”

He’s right about there being drivers of change: models indicate that 70% of the human population will live in cities by 2050*.

CEA, the concept of growing crops in a secure indoor space, is seen by many as the ultimate solution to food security in an urban context and the upcoming conference will provide an opportunity for stakeholders in the field to discuss how to reach the future that they want to see.

Speakers include visionaries: Matt, from Method; and Thomas Cox, a Bristolian Architect with ambitious plans for a modular high-rise farming block. Both will arrive at the upcoming Agri-TechE conference with plenty of thoughts to fuel a debate on the future of CEA.

Food Computers and Cooperatives – Matt Millington, Method

Method is a strategic design studio, making products, services, experiences, and businesses for the digital age. They use design as a tool to help organizations make better strategic decisions about the future of business.

Matt says: “At Method, we often make things that are designed to trigger controversy and promote a conversation about what a future might look like, and in this case, we hit upon the Personal Food Computer as just that – an object to frame a conversation around.

“What does it mean for the food system, if something like the food computer became common-place?” According to Matt, it’s all part of the mission to simulate debate: “Rather than asking people what they want, we show them that potential future.”

“The food computer is an experimental growth chamber designed to be built by anybody, and at a low cost, with detailed instructions also available for free online,” Matt adds. 'Growth recipes', shared via the cloud, enable the grower to control specific attributes of the crop through close monitoring of ‘environmental inputs' such as lighting.

Matt expects that as CEA is picked up in urban centers, growers could begin to form into cooperatives, which will provide a big boost to the overall productivity: “Much as we’re starting to see local urban energy production in parts of London, producing their own electricity and selling it back, I think you’ll see in future cooperatives within London who are producing their own food on a relatively large scale.

“So, I think you’ll see CEA in cities develop more on a cellular basis – areas of cities providing the urban farming model, which then influences perhaps what a supermarket sells in that region. I think supermarkets will play a big role influencing the sorts of crops that get grown and sold within local communities.”

At the Agri-TechE conference, Matt is ready to fuel debate: “We need to provoke a conversation around what the future should look like… in order to make decisions to design toward that future or, more importantly, away from that future that we don’t want.”

SkyFarms – Thomas Cox, Wotton Donoghue Architects

Thomas Cox is a ‘grey-sky’ thinker. He is concerned by levels of air pollution in dense urban centers. Smog, caused by the release of Nitrogen Oxides from internal combustion engines, is a major health issue in the world’s largest population centers such as Los Angeles, Beijing, and Delhi, and is becoming increasingly prevalent in London. Thomas’ response is a building design that he calls the ‘Sky-Farm’.

“The Sky Farm is covered in beans and pulses that take in nitrogen from the air and store it in their roots. Essentially, you have a big greenhouse, which is cleaning up air pollution and converting this into green fertilizer and food.”

Thomas designed his Sky Farm to sit on a small footprint of land in Battersea, on the south bank of the River Thames in London. “The ‘Sky Farm’ was designed to be a small-scale supplement to traditional farming, but I worked out that it could sustainably feed half of the population of the borough of Battersea – approximately 40,000 people.”

“I think we need to plan now, so we’re ready to act when population increase starts to detrimentally affect our quality of life. I know that’s a bit of a bleak vision, and we’re maybe talking 100 years’ time, but we need to stay ahead of the curve.”

Matt and Thomas will be joining the fray at Agri-TechE’s ‘Controlled Environment Agriculture – The Industry is Growing Up’ conference, alongside some twenty other speakers. Other participants include IGS, world-leaders in vertical farm engineering; LettUs Grow, looking at total in-farm automation; and Growpura, designing hydroponics solutions on a massive scale.

The all-day event will be held at The John Innes Centre, Norwich Research Park NR4 7UH on 18th March, 9:00 am – 5:00 pm. For tickets or more information, please visit www.agri-tech-e.co.uk/events

Discussing Green Funding At WIA Paris

Green Funding or Impact Investing is when lenders and investors make their decisions based on if the company in question has environmentally conscious business practices such as alternative energy, water, and waste management, or socially positive goals

Giving the Green Light to Green Funding

Green Funding or Impact Investing is when lenders and investors make their decisions based on if the company in question has environmentally conscious business practices such as alternative energy, water, and waste management, or socially positive goals. Companies like Danone and General Mills, as well as the major financial players in ag, are leading the path to responsible funding in the industry.

Green Funding: Critical or Counterproductive

We’ll be discussing how the practice of green funding is affecting the ag space. What are the current metrics being used to determine if a company is green enough, and how are they being tracked? On the flip side, will this practice make a positive impact or is it just an opportunity for companies to “green wash” themselves to get through the funding hoop? Join us to learn more!

As Close To A Crystal Ball On Brexit As You’re Going To Get

Next month the UK will formally begin withdrawing from the European Union. How will that affect your market and your supply chain? What are the implications and are you prepared?

Next month the UK will formally begin withdrawing from the European Union. How will that affect your market and your supply chain? What are the implications and are you prepared?

Agricultural Trade After Brexit
Caroline Heil
Associate M&A Corporate
Ernst & Young

Agriculture has a prominent role in the European Union (EU) and agricultural trade is one of the most important parts of the Community’s Common Market. The development of a customs union and free movement of agricultural products was - from its beginning in the 1950s - always framed by the idea of a Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) to be established among the Member States. With the United Kingdom (UK) as a strong player on the ag market leaving the EU, an influential voice in CAP will be gone. But the relationship between the UK and EU after the end of the transition period on 31 December 2020 that was agreed upon in the Withdrawal Agreement, is still unclear and subject to negotiations.

In the session Agricultural Trade after Brexit, we will focus on the influence Brexit will most likely have on agricultural trade and the ag market in Europe and what trade between EU and UK might be like as of 1st January 2021. We will build and face different scenarios likely to happen and outline potential threats, but also opportunities that may come with Brexit.

Minette Batters is the first female president in the 112-year history of the National Farmers' Union. She has been called the most powerful farmer in the UK. Join us as she shares her insights into one of today's most pressing agricultural issues.

"How Farming Can Help Mitigate Climate Change"
Minette Batters
President
National Farmers' Union

Farming and food are much maligned as a problem of the modern age, but it’s rarely recognized for its adaptability and phenomenal successes. For too long, farming has been on the wrong end of the climate debate, rarely recognized for its role in the carbon cycle and even more rarely recognized for the enormous potential of agriculture to deliver a range of solutions for mitigating anthropogenic carbon emissions.

The NFU has a vision for UK agriculture to have a Net Zero contribution to climate change by 2040. The NFU is optimistic about the future role of farming in producing climate-friendly food, protecting the environment and fulfilling our moral imperative to produce safe, sustainable and affordable food at home and for our customers overseas. Ms. Batters will present the NFU vision, industry action and the critical need for the government to get agricultural policy and trade policy aligned.

Shape The Future of CEA Energy Policy at IAES Conference – Special Discount For Growers

Are you an owner, operator, or employee of an indoor farm? IAES Conference is offering a special reduced registration of only $100 for growers and cultivators

SAN DIEGO, CA, January 15, 2020–As California policymakers develop codes for Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA), Resource Innovation Institute (RII) will convene the inaugural Indoor Agriculture Energy Solutions (IAES) Conference, connecting policymakers, utility program managers, equipment manufacturers, and suppliers, researchers, manufacturers, cultivators, and investors to shape the future of energy policies and utility programs for CEA.

The IAES Conference will be held at the San Diego La Jolla Marriott, February 24-26, 2020.

Are you an owner, operator, or employee of an indoor farm? IAES Conference is offering a special reduced registration of only $100 for growers and cultivators.

To receive your discount code, please contact

Stephen Baboi at sbaboi@drintl.com

or on LinkedIn and ask about the “IAES Grower Discount.”

Expanding on RII’s mission to advance resource efficiency in the rapidly expanding indoor agriculture sector, this first-of-its-kind event arrives at a critical moment in time for controlled environment agriculture. Cannabis legalization is accelerating across North America, and the urban and vertical farming sector is scaling rapidly for crops of all kinds.

Urban areas and food deserts are looking at indoor farming as a way to access locally grown produce.  As a result, the carbon and energy implications of indoor controlled environments are becoming more impactful. Drawing from the experiences of early models, this conference will explore energy solutions for indoor agriculture without focusing on any one crop.

Conference attendees will access educational sessions presented by experts in the field, connect with policymakers and other industry leaders, and discuss cutting-edge policies and technologies. IAES will elevate innovative solutions related to energy access, efficiency and sustainability and shape the future of indoor agriculture.

Keynote speakers include Kay Doyle from the Massachusetts Cannabis Control Commission, Dr. Mark Lefsrud from McGill University’s Biomass Production Laboratory, and Dr. Nadia Sabeh a.k.a “Dr. Greenhouse.”

“We have the opportunity to take the lessons learned from initial government, utility and non-profit responses addressing the energy and carbon impacts of regulated cannabis and apply them to the broader world of controlled environment agriculture,” said Derek Smith, Executive Director of RII. “These learnings will inform controlled environment agriculture broadly. This is precisely why we are hosting the Indoor Agriculture Energy Solutions conference. And we look forward to convening top stakeholders to join the dialogue.”

Fourth Edition of Aquafarm To Be Held On 19 And 20 February

On 19 and 20 February, AquaFarm and NovelFarm are back, the two simultaneous events on current and future food production trends, devoted to the breeding of aquatic species and the cultivation of algae, indoor crops, and vertical farming

On 19 and 20 February, AquaFarm and NovelFarm are back, the two simultaneous events on current and future food production trends, devoted to the breeding of aquatic species and the cultivation of algae, indoor crops, and vertical farming.

The 2020 edition will be totally geared to innovation and environmental sustainability
AquaFarm, now in its fourth edition, is the yearly appointment for operators of the whole aquaculture supply chain. Since its debut, it has been developed in collaboration with API and AMA, the two leading Italian associations in this sector.

The event bears witness to the growing role of aquaculture worldwide. According to the most recent data published by FAO, 53% of aquatic species destined for human nutrition worldwide are produced by farming, to which about 30 million tons of aquatic plants and macro and microalgae must be added. Overall consumption is estimated at 20.5 kg per person, with an average yearly increase of 3.2% from 1961 to today, surpassing both population growth and protein intake derived from terrestrial species. With the total number of fisheries products essentially at the levels of the late 1980s, growth is upheld and will be even more so in the future, by aquaculture.

An interesting fact emerging from the FAO survey is that half of the production from breeding is related to aquatic species that are defined as "extractive". They are the ones that get their nourishment filtering water from the environment; in this way they also use the waste produced by those species which must instead be nourished by man, thus achieving an integrated production and reducing the environmental impact. FAO and producers are relying heavily on these farms to combine sustainability and increased food production with aquaculture.

The 2020 program focuses on three themes. Environmental sustainability, intended both as a reduction of the impact of farming on the ecosystem and as a resilience of production in presence of environmental changes, not only climatic but also due to chemical and microplastic pollution. Research and innovation in all sectors of the supply chain with particular attention to cooperative projects at the European level. The finished product from aquaculture also narrated through tastings aimed at the distribution and to individual and collective catering

NovelFarm, at its second edition, is the international exhibition-conference event dedicated to innovation in Agritech sector, with in-depth information on soilless crops, the circular economy of new crops and the urban farming.

The NovelFarm 2020 conference program will analyze some challenges for our planet in the coming years, to which the agricultural innovation of soilless soil tries to give answers. Feeding the growing population by reducing food waste and the impacts of logistics and transport by bringing primary food production as close as possible to places of consumption; adopting cultivation methods that multiply the yields and guarantee maximum quality and stability of the organoleptic and nutritive characteristics.

In the exhibition area, companies will display systems for soilless cultivation and vertical farming, LEDs, biostimulants, biotechnologies, sensors, robots and automation systems.

HYVE To Exhibit At MISSION TOMORROW - On Display Will Be Indoor Farming For The Future

Indoor farming is in its infancy but holds great promise for the future. HYVE is positioned to be a leader in the industry and its systems promise to not only alter the way the world grows fresh crops and feeds people using smaller geographic footprints but also serves as systems that create jobs

HYVE Indoor Vertical Farming Systems is pleased to be an exhibitor at MISSION TOMORROW on October 23rd and 24th at the Richmond Raceway in Richmond, Virginia. MISSION TOMORROW brings together nearly 150 businesses and organizations from across Central Virginia and the Greater Richmond, Virginia Area to introduce an estimated 12,000 7th grade students to the opportunities for education and employment in the future.

Sponsored by many fine companies including Dominion Energy, Altria, Kings Dominion, Facebook, CarMax, and gsk Pharmaceuticals, among others. According to its site MISSION TOMORROW says, “This fun event is designed to introduce the next generation of the local workforce to a variety of career opportunities available in the region through interactive engagement with the exhibitors.”

Indoor farming is in its infancy but holds great promise for the future. HYVE is positioned to be a leader in the industry and its systems promise to not only alter the way the world grows fresh crops and feeds people using smaller geographic footprints but also serves as systems that create jobs.

According to Alia Clements, Program Manager for HYVE: “Vertical farming is a positive influencer and disrupter when it comes to providing fresh, healthy food and other crops for a growing population. Our systems are an example and precursor for an industry trend that will supplement traditional farming in meeting the world’s food needs. We are very interested in participating and educating people at MISSION TOMORROW because many students or even the general public have no idea just how dynamic and positive vertical farming can be for future generations.”

She adds: “We have targeted education as a market for our smaller indoor farming hydroponic systems known as LF-ONE or “Little Farm” because it teaches many of the

STEM elements needed in classrooms with a very positive hands-on approach. We’ll be showing and actual LF-ONE unit at MISSION TOMORROW along with a video on our large- scale complete hydroponic systems for commercial growers.”

Ken Bryant, Director of Marketing for HYVE says “Vertical farming holds tremendous promise for commercial farming both today and especially in the future. Twenty years from now it is likely to be very common to see crops grown indoors year-round in spaces that take much less real estate, deliver excellent return-on-investment for the growers,

and provide consumers with a healthy choice for fresh food. Add-in that our systems eliminate the need for harmful pesticides and herbicides and create an environment where crops can be grown year-round with great predictability and you can see why this is a very exciting industry. We believe HYVE is positioned to be a leader in this field because we differentiate ourselves from others with our complete system that provides all the elements needed for indoor vertical farming. Students now in the 7th grade can be leaders in this industry and at the forefront of doing something very special, that will influence generations to come as we build a better world together. MISSION TOMORROW is one platform to help educate those students on how they can be change agents.

HYVE systems are 100% hydroponic, use LED grow lighting, and thus use fewer natural resources and reduce carbon footprint. By growing indoors many of the elements of nature that plague traditional crop harvest can be mitigated. With vertical indoor farming, factors such as floods, droughts, and things of that nature are not factored in the food supply chain.

HYVE head grower Paul Edmondson is very excited about the future of indoor farming and all that the method offers. He says “For many years I have grown crops and have been subject to many uncontrollable forces of nature. Predictability, quality of crops, cost evaluation - all these have been things that are out of control many times for traditional farmers and their conventional methods. Indoor contained environment agriculture will not supplant traditional methods but will give farmers a great advantage moving forward to help them achieve a real measure of controlled, predictable growth. I have personally grown more than 60 varieties of plants in our labs using our systems and am confident that HYVE indoor farming systems will be something exciting for the industry and world of growing.”

MISSION TOMORROW counts among its collaborators the Richmond Chamber of Commerce and more information on the event can be found at https://www.chamberrva.com/programs/mission-tomorrow/.

Information on HYVE systems can be found at www.growhyve.com.
