Earth911 Podcast: Freight Farms’ Jake Felser On Hydroponic Agriculture & Container Farming

Earth911 talks with Jake Felser, chief technology officer at Freight Farms, about the company’s “complete farming system inside a box.”

By Earth911

JULY 14, 2021

Earth911 talks with Jake Felser, chief technology officer at Freight Farms, about the company’s “complete farming system inside a box.” It’s a very big box that includes climate controls and monitoring systems to make farming easy for anyone to do. Freight Farms builds and delivers shipping containers converted into highly efficient hydroponic farms that use LED lighting to grow and deliver fresh produce year-round.

Jake discusses the cost of getting started, how many people are needed to run the farm, and how the built-in automation helps farmers plan a profitable business. Grocers, restaurants, communities, and small farms are using Freight Farms installations at 350 farms in 49 states and 32 countries. The company says most of its customers are new to agriculture and operate right in the urban and rural communities they serve.

Jake Felser, CTO at Freight Farms, visits Sustainability in Your Ear to talk about automated hydroponic gardening in shipping containers.

Growing and distributing vegetables locally is one of the most effective ways to lower our society’s carbon footprint. While agriculture contributes about 10% of the U.S. greenhouse gas emissions each year, the majority of that is from raising animals. By increasing our consumption of locally grown vegetables, we can improve local health and reduce overall emissions from transportation. It’s not easy to grow food in most cities using traditional methods. The introduction of container farms and vertical farming inside buildings can reshape food deserts and create economic opportunities.

In this conversation, we talk about whether indoor-grown food is equally healthy? How has the space of vertical farming merged?

An excerpt from Futurized:

In this conversation, we talk about whether indoor-grown food is equally healthy? How has the space of vertical farming merged? We discuss the demand for organic food, environmental concerns, soil quality depletion, groundwater depletion, and chemical pollution. Eddy explains the main distinctions and concepts, including Greenhouses, Hydroponics, Aeroponics, Aquaponic, Vertical farming, and the various growth vectors, such as a greenhouse, shipping container, skyscraper, or warehouse. We discuss sensors, climate control, LED lighting.

How do you define the vertical farming market? Who are the players? Which disruption forces are most actively influencing the field of vertical farming right now? How does he stay up to date? How does he recommend my listeners (and I) stay up to date? Looking at the next decade, I ask Eddy what he thinks will happen to vertical farming? We discuss high yield local food production in inner cities, near deserts, on islands, on in space, and beyond.

PODCAST: Indoor Ag Continues To Grow

Indoor agriculture has certainly made headlines in recent years. From large investments to partnerships with retailers and companies like Driscoll’s. But how much of this is hype and how much is here to stay?

Apr 22nd, 2021

Farm of the Future

Tim Hammerich - News Reporter

It’s time for your Farm of the Future Report. I’m Tim Hammerich.

Indoor agriculture has certainly made headlines in recent years. From large investments to partnerships with retailers and companies like Driscoll’s. But how much of this is hype and how much is here to stay? Co-founder and CEO Viraj Puri is very optimistic about the road ahead for these growing systems.

Puri… “I think modern greenhouse farming has a very successful legacy of being practiced profitability in many parts of the world. Much of the technology is robust. Using an example of say tomatoes, for example. I don't think most consumers know this, but upwards of 60% of tomatoes that are found in retail stores in America today are grown in a greenhouse.”

Puri said other greenhouse vegetables like cucumbers and bell peppers are also on the rise.

Puri… “And so we believe that there is still ample opportunity for the indoor farming segment and the greenhouse growing segment to grow not only in the U.S. but in many parts of the world. Because these facilities can really be located anywhere, geographically, particularly in close proximity to large marketplaces, we believe there's a lot of supply chain benefits. That can take cost out of the supply chain, waste and other factors.”

Gotham Greens continues to expand the greenhouse production systems across the country.
