As Close To A Crystal Ball On Brexit As You’re Going To Get

Agricultural Trade After Brexit
Caroline Heil
Associate M&A Corporate
Ernst & Young
Agriculture has a prominent role in the European Union (EU) and agricultural trade is one of the most important parts of the Community’s Common Market. The development of a customs union and free movement of agricultural products was - from its beginning in the 1950s - always framed by the idea of a Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) to be established among the Member States. With the United Kingdom (UK) as a strong player on the ag market leaving the EU, an influential voice in CAP will be gone. But the relationship between the UK and EU after the end of the transition period on 31 December 2020 that was agreed upon in the Withdrawal Agreement, is still unclear and subject to negotiations.
In the session Agricultural Trade after Brexit, we will focus on the influence Brexit will most likely have on agricultural trade and the ag market in Europe and what trade between EU and UK might be like as of 1st January 2021. We will build and face different scenarios likely to happen and outline potential threats, but also opportunities that may come with Brexit.

"How Farming Can Help Mitigate Climate Change"
Minette Batters
President
National Farmers' Union
Farming and food are much maligned as a problem of the modern age, but it’s rarely recognized for its adaptability and phenomenal successes. For too long, farming has been on the wrong end of the climate debate, rarely recognized for its role in the carbon cycle and even more rarely recognized for the enormous potential of agriculture to deliver a range of solutions for mitigating anthropogenic carbon emissions.
The NFU has a vision for UK agriculture to have a Net Zero contribution to climate change by 2040. The NFU is optimistic about the future role of farming in producing climate-friendly food, protecting the environment and fulfilling our moral imperative to produce safe, sustainable and affordable food at home and for our customers overseas. Ms. Batters will present the NFU vision, industry action and the critical need for the government to get agricultural policy and trade policy aligned.

Shape The Future of CEA Energy Policy at IAES Conference – Special Discount For Growers
Are you an owner, operator, or employee of an indoor farm? IAES Conference is offering a special reduced registration of only $100 for growers and cultivators
SAN DIEGO, CA, January 15, 2020–As California policymakers develop codes for Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA), Resource Innovation Institute (RII) will convene the inaugural Indoor Agriculture Energy Solutions (IAES) Conference, connecting policymakers, utility program managers, equipment manufacturers, and suppliers, researchers, manufacturers, cultivators, and investors to shape the future of energy policies and utility programs for CEA.
The IAES Conference will be held at the San Diego La Jolla Marriott, February 24-26, 2020.
Are you an owner, operator, or employee of an indoor farm? IAES Conference is offering a special reduced registration of only $100 for growers and cultivators.
To receive your discount code, please contact
Stephen Baboi at sbaboi@drintl.com
or on LinkedIn and ask about the “IAES Grower Discount.”
Expanding on RII’s mission to advance resource efficiency in the rapidly expanding indoor agriculture sector, this first-of-its-kind event arrives at a critical moment in time for controlled environment agriculture. Cannabis legalization is accelerating across North America, and the urban and vertical farming sector is scaling rapidly for crops of all kinds.
Urban areas and food deserts are looking at indoor farming as a way to access locally grown produce. As a result, the carbon and energy implications of indoor controlled environments are becoming more impactful. Drawing from the experiences of early models, this conference will explore energy solutions for indoor agriculture without focusing on any one crop.
Conference attendees will access educational sessions presented by experts in the field, connect with policymakers and other industry leaders, and discuss cutting-edge policies and technologies. IAES will elevate innovative solutions related to energy access, efficiency and sustainability and shape the future of indoor agriculture.
Keynote speakers include Kay Doyle from the Massachusetts Cannabis Control Commission, Dr. Mark Lefsrud from McGill University’s Biomass Production Laboratory, and Dr. Nadia Sabeh a.k.a “Dr. Greenhouse.”
“We have the opportunity to take the lessons learned from initial government, utility and non-profit responses addressing the energy and carbon impacts of regulated cannabis and apply them to the broader world of controlled environment agriculture,” said Derek Smith, Executive Director of RII. “These learnings will inform controlled environment agriculture broadly. This is precisely why we are hosting the Indoor Agriculture Energy Solutions conference. And we look forward to convening top stakeholders to join the dialogue.”
Visit www.iaesconference.com to review the program and speaker bios, inquire about sponsorship, and register for the conference. To stay up-to-date on conference news, follow us on LinkedIn and Facebook.

Fourth Edition of Aquafarm To Be Held On 19 And 20 February
On 19 and 20 February, AquaFarm and NovelFarm are back, the two simultaneous events on current and future food production trends, devoted to the breeding of aquatic species and the cultivation of algae, indoor crops, and vertical farming
On 19 and 20 February, AquaFarm and NovelFarm are back, the two simultaneous events on current and future food production trends, devoted to the breeding of aquatic species and the cultivation of algae, indoor crops, and vertical farming.
The 2020 edition will be totally geared to innovation and environmental sustainability
AquaFarm, now in its fourth edition, is the yearly appointment for operators of the whole aquaculture supply chain. Since its debut, it has been developed in collaboration with API and AMA, the two leading Italian associations in this sector.
The event bears witness to the growing role of aquaculture worldwide. According to the most recent data published by FAO, 53% of aquatic species destined for human nutrition worldwide are produced by farming, to which about 30 million tons of aquatic plants and macro and microalgae must be added. Overall consumption is estimated at 20.5 kg per person, with an average yearly increase of 3.2% from 1961 to today, surpassing both population growth and protein intake derived from terrestrial species. With the total number of fisheries products essentially at the levels of the late 1980s, growth is upheld and will be even more so in the future, by aquaculture.
An interesting fact emerging from the FAO survey is that half of the production from breeding is related to aquatic species that are defined as "extractive". They are the ones that get their nourishment filtering water from the environment; in this way they also use the waste produced by those species which must instead be nourished by man, thus achieving an integrated production and reducing the environmental impact. FAO and producers are relying heavily on these farms to combine sustainability and increased food production with aquaculture.
The 2020 program focuses on three themes. Environmental sustainability, intended both as a reduction of the impact of farming on the ecosystem and as a resilience of production in presence of environmental changes, not only climatic but also due to chemical and microplastic pollution. Research and innovation in all sectors of the supply chain with particular attention to cooperative projects at the European level. The finished product from aquaculture also narrated through tastings aimed at the distribution and to individual and collective catering
NovelFarm, at its second edition, is the international exhibition-conference event dedicated to innovation in Agritech sector, with in-depth information on soilless crops, the circular economy of new crops and the urban farming.
The NovelFarm 2020 conference program will analyze some challenges for our planet in the coming years, to which the agricultural innovation of soilless soil tries to give answers. Feeding the growing population by reducing food waste and the impacts of logistics and transport by bringing primary food production as close as possible to places of consumption; adopting cultivation methods that multiply the yields and guarantee maximum quality and stability of the organoleptic and nutritive characteristics.
In the exhibition area, companies will display systems for soilless cultivation and vertical farming, LEDs, biostimulants, biotechnologies, sensors, robots and automation systems.

HYVE To Exhibit At MISSION TOMORROW - On Display Will Be Indoor Farming For The Future
Indoor farming is in its infancy but holds great promise for the future. HYVE is positioned to be a leader in the industry and its systems promise to not only alter the way the world grows fresh crops and feeds people using smaller geographic footprints but also serves as systems that create jobs
HYVE Indoor Vertical Farming Systems is pleased to be an exhibitor at MISSION TOMORROW on October 23rd and 24th at the Richmond Raceway in Richmond, Virginia. MISSION TOMORROW brings together nearly 150 businesses and organizations from across Central Virginia and the Greater Richmond, Virginia Area to introduce an estimated 12,000 7th grade students to the opportunities for education and employment in the future.
Sponsored by many fine companies including Dominion Energy, Altria, Kings Dominion, Facebook, CarMax, and gsk Pharmaceuticals, among others. According to its site MISSION TOMORROW says, “This fun event is designed to introduce the next generation of the local workforce to a variety of career opportunities available in the region through interactive engagement with the exhibitors.”
Indoor farming is in its infancy but holds great promise for the future. HYVE is positioned to be a leader in the industry and its systems promise to not only alter the way the world grows fresh crops and feeds people using smaller geographic footprints but also serves as systems that create jobs.
According to Alia Clements, Program Manager for HYVE: “Vertical farming is a positive influencer and disrupter when it comes to providing fresh, healthy food and other crops for a growing population. Our systems are an example and precursor for an industry trend that will supplement traditional farming in meeting the world’s food needs. We are very interested in participating and educating people at MISSION TOMORROW because many students or even the general public have no idea just how dynamic and positive vertical farming can be for future generations.”
She adds: “We have targeted education as a market for our smaller indoor farming hydroponic systems known as LF-ONE or “Little Farm” because it teaches many of the
STEM elements needed in classrooms with a very positive hands-on approach. We’ll be showing and actual LF-ONE unit at MISSION TOMORROW along with a video on our large- scale complete hydroponic systems for commercial growers.”
Ken Bryant, Director of Marketing for HYVE says “Vertical farming holds tremendous promise for commercial farming both today and especially in the future. Twenty years from now it is likely to be very common to see crops grown indoors year-round in spaces that take much less real estate, deliver excellent return-on-investment for the growers,
and provide consumers with a healthy choice for fresh food. Add-in that our systems eliminate the need for harmful pesticides and herbicides and create an environment where crops can be grown year-round with great predictability and you can see why this is a very exciting industry. We believe HYVE is positioned to be a leader in this field because we differentiate ourselves from others with our complete system that provides all the elements needed for indoor vertical farming. Students now in the 7th grade can be leaders in this industry and at the forefront of doing something very special, that will influence generations to come as we build a better world together. MISSION TOMORROW is one platform to help educate those students on how they can be change agents.
HYVE systems are 100% hydroponic, use LED grow lighting, and thus use fewer natural resources and reduce carbon footprint. By growing indoors many of the elements of nature that plague traditional crop harvest can be mitigated. With vertical indoor farming, factors such as floods, droughts, and things of that nature are not factored in the food supply chain.
HYVE head grower Paul Edmondson is very excited about the future of indoor farming and all that the method offers. He says “For many years I have grown crops and have been subject to many uncontrollable forces of nature. Predictability, quality of crops, cost evaluation - all these have been things that are out of control many times for traditional farmers and their conventional methods. Indoor contained environment agriculture will not supplant traditional methods but will give farmers a great advantage moving forward to help them achieve a real measure of controlled, predictable growth. I have personally grown more than 60 varieties of plants in our labs using our systems and am confident that HYVE indoor farming systems will be something exciting for the industry and world of growing.”

Better Food For More People: Notes From The World Food Summit 2019
“The global food system is a major driver of challenges relating to human health, the climate change and environment. We need to think and act in new ways to face challenges of climate changes, hunger, food safety and unhealthy food habits
SEPTEMBER 6, 2019
KYLE BALDOCK
All of us know our food system is broken, but are we all willing to do what it takes to fix it?
Better Food for More People
“The global food system is a major driver of challenges relating to human health, the climate change and environment. We need to think and act in new ways to face challenges of climate changes, hunger, food safety and unhealthy food habits.
The world is facing enormous challenges if we are to achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Today, more than 800 million people live in hunger, 1 in 10 people in the world fall ill after eating contaminated food, while more than 2 billion people are overweight or obese. More than 1.3 billion tonnes of food is wasted every year, equivalent to 24% of all food produced for human consumption.
In connection with these figures a huge challenge is that international researchers point out that expected changes in population and income levels in the period 2010 to 2050 can increase environmental impact from production and consumption of food by 50-90% globally if targeted remedial measures are not taken. The environmental impact will reach levels beyond the planetary boundaries that define a safe operating space for humanity.
According to researchers, only a combination of measures will be sufficient to mitigate the expected increase in environmental impact. Combined efforts in relation to prevention and reduction of food waste, technological changes to increase the resource efficiency in food production and changed dietary habits are imperative.”
During the last week of August, Copenhagen was the host city to the World Food Summit 2019 and a series of side events to discuss strategies towards tackling the aforementioned challenges and realising the mantra of the summit: Better Food for More People.
How do we create the necessary change? And what is the role of governments, international organisations, private sector, academia and civil society?
Based on the UN Sustainable Development Goals, the World Food Summit connects leaders from around the world to discuss concrete solutions for transforming the global food system, focusing on the following topics:
-Ensuring Food Safety and Food Security
-Better Health and Diets
-Improved Resource Efficiency
The World Food Summit is an annual accelerator of actions necessary to transform the food systems to become safer, healthier, and more sustainable in response to the UN Sustainable Development Goals. The Danish Minister for Food Mr. Mogens Jensen hosted the Summit to work with leaders ready to act on the global food challenges.
The first day of the summit was held in the national parliament of Denmark with an honorary visit from HRH the Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark. Speakers from different parts of the world shared their own visions and solutions in the fields of the environmental impact of agriculture, waste prevention, and the necessity of an overhaul in our dietary choices. The fundamental message of all the talks was clear: there is no time left for inaction!
On the second day of the summit, three workshops identified key actions from all stakeholders globally that will enable us to reach the identified pathways towards a healthy and sustainable food system in accordance with the sustainable development goals.
World Food Summit plans to tackle the challenges facing our food systems
These are some of the suggestions made by the workshop moderators at the end of day two:
-Reform the agricultural subsidy program to reflect the real price of food
-Support and empower local production
-Educate the general public on nutrition
-Implement regional solutions by considering the specific differences and needs
-Create a World Food Forum to come up with guidelines and minimum standards that will help businesses to move in the right direction using new business models
-Enforce governmental regulation, minimum standards and trade deals that prioritise environmental concerns
-Invest in the whole value chain to ease the transition to a sustainable food system
-Rethink the fundamentally flawed systems instead of super optimisation
-Create the global food-borne diseases database through WHO and national governments
-Implement transparency and accountability in the value chain as an indispensable characteristic of the system
During last year’s summit, ten countries became signatory partners to one or more of the World Food Summit’s three commitments. These commitments are about information and nutrition, food safety and food waste; together, they create a framework that can generate tangible results going forward and establish cooperation between partner countries on fostering local solutions and public-private partnerships. This year, five more countries added their names to the signatory lists of these commitments to show there is a strong collective will to commit and work in collaboration to tackle the challenges facing our food systems.
We are way past the time for making small changes to mitigate climate crisis: we need a plan to revamp our entire food system as fast as possible.
The Danish food minister Mr. Jensen closed the summit by reminding everyone about what John F. Kennedy said on his 1962 speech that lead to the Apollo 11 mission later on. We need to come up with business models to achieve goals like the Danish government’s ambitious plan of 70% fewer emissions from 1990s levels; no one knows how exactly we will get there but first you need to have bold ideas and then find the ways to fulfil them.
Take home messages:
-Identify the false advertisements and marketing schemes and support governments, businesses and organizations that are truly fighting for a better future for our food systems
-Embrace different solutions and diversify our actions in fixing the food system
-There is less focus on the production methods than in waste and consumer choices
-Research on crucial issues like climate change should be a public funded program to avoid biases-We need to come up with a transition period plan for industries that are problematic to our planet to change their business models
-Financing innovation should be our number one priority
-Raising awareness about our food system, labelling and carbon tax need to be a continuous effort
We need to diversify the solutions and a commitment from all of us to consider the repercussions of our daily decisions on the planet. Going back to John F. Kennedy’s vision “We have the power to make this the best generation of mankind in the history of the world or make it the last.”

Cultivate '19 is a wrap
The ninetieth edition of the trade show was one of the biggest ones in the last years and expectations are this is not to change for the next edition
Automation, Biological Crop Control And Mobile Accessibility
Booths are broken down, bags are packed and cars, airplanes and other means of transport have left Columbus. Cultivate '19 is a wrap. The ninetieth edition of the trade show was one of the biggest ones in the last years and expectations are this is not to change for the next edition.
With conditions being favorable for plant growers, the atmosphere at the show was good and that pleased the suppliers - even though some noticed a lesser amount of vegetable and cannabis growers made the trip to Columbus. Still, many suppliers, especially providing biological crop protection for these crops, made it to the show and weren't displeased: the demand for solutions and for knowledge is high and so was the interest.
Labour and automation
Like for other growers in the industry, labour, more specifically skilled labour, is an issue amongst potted plant growers and investing in solutions for this is of high relevance.
Also LED lights were all over the show - although not as many as earlier this year on GreenTech, where it seemed to be a disco party every now and then. Amongst technical suppliers, accessibility of data found in the greenhouses is an important topic and many more launched solutions to provide better insight and mobile applications for their platforms.
Water quality
Then there's water quality. If it's minuscule bubbles added to the irrigation water, solutions for fertilisation or biostimulants to be added to the water - it all could be found at the trade show this year.
Curious to see what solutions we're talking about more specifically? Keep an eye out for Friday's publication, when we'll release our photo report.

Future of Indoor Grown Food Discussed At Indoor AgTech
What role will indoor-grown food be playing in the future and how will the vertical farming industry develop? There’s a lot going on
What role will indoor-grown food be playing in the future and how will the vertical farming industry develop? There’s a lot going on: Investors find their way into the industry, growing facilities are scaling up and collaborations are being formed these days. On the other hand, companies go out of business, there’s talk about a bubble and the profitability and scalability of the sector is questioned regularly. At the Indoor AgTech event, that kicked off yesterday in New York, the future of the industry and its relationship with retail and consumers is discussed.
The Indoor AgTech event unites over 300 companies interested in this industry and coming from various parts of the fresh produce chain - from technical suppliers and breeders to growers and retailers - showing there’s a lot of interest in the market. Panel discussions and talks are to help the industry find its way into a durable future.
That there’s opportunities for indoor growing is emphasized by many speakers at the event. Walter Robb for example, former CEO of Whole Foods, sees a disruption in the food value chain that he never saw before and believes there are opportunities for indoor farms as the retail industry is urged to innovate as well and the importance of produce is high. He says indoor agriculture operators have to respond to these opportunities as well: by moving to favorable products and telling their story to retailers and consumers for example, but also by closing the last mile data and connecting the consumer to the grower, sharing also nutritional and story aspects.
Transparency
Providing transparency was a recurring theme in more discussions on the first day of the Indoor AgTech. While on the one hand operators like Tobias Peggs with vertical farming company Square Roots explain how they’ve integrated their complete value chain from seed to retail and how almost 4 per cent of their packages get scanned by the consumer, providing data about the product, these individual closed chains are also defined as one of the challenges for the industry.
“Many indoor farming companies state they are an R&D company, software supplier, distributor and building its own produce brands”, says Caleb Harper with the OpenAg Initiative, doubting whether these individual integrated chains will bring the trust that’s needed to upscale and further develop the industry. He pleads for companies specializing in one part of the value chain, optimizing and sharing information gathered, developing the industry and in that way bringing trust to both investors and consumers. “We are to learn from the mistakes made in the industry. Whether it’s the US, Japan or even the Netherlands, some problems are unique, but standards exist. The greenhouse industry scaled thanks to creating and sharing these standards.”
Driving the industry
Other topics discussed in the event include investing opportunities and what’s needed to get proper funding. Today more greenhouse operators are programmed and also more technical suppliers will share what they can bring to the industry. We will of course keep you updated and provide you with a photo report on Monday.
