The 2021 Global CEA Census has launched with a focus on growers’ perspectives on sustainability and how they are measuring specific ESG (environmental, social, and governance) outcomes.
This year Agritecture Consulting will partner with AgTech leader WayBeyond who has taken over the responsibility of the Census from automation business Autogrow.

Artemis Ag has opened its third annual State of Indoor Farming Survey, and is looking for your input. The survey will provide insights on emerging trends and challenges in the greenhouse and vertical farming industries.
“We’re looking forward to learning how growers are facing new challenges such as COVID-19,” says Allison Kopf, CEO of Artemis Ag. “In the past, expansion was one of the prime goals for growers, and we’ve asked some new questions around the topic. We will be sharing even more information related to technology usage, the evolution of the industry, and how growers are working with lenders.”
In the past few years, more than 500 growers have participated in Artemis’ annual State of Indoor Farming Surveys. Past reports have been downloaded more than 2 million times and are one of the most widely circulated and respected sources of industry data.
More and better data collected means more insights for growers. Growers can participate in the 2020 State of Indoor Farming survey here.
The survey will be open for a few weeks and Artemis expects to launch the 2020 report immediately following.

The School of Fisheries, Aquaculture, and Aquatic Sciences (SFAAS) invites growers to participate in a survey study to generate a ‘snapshot’ of the status of the aquaponics industry. This survey is designed for hobbyists, educators, and for-profit aquaponic producers
The School of Fisheries, Aquaculture, and Aquatic Sciences (SFAAS) invites growers to participate in a survey study to generate a ‘snapshot’ of the status of the aquaponics industry. This survey is designed for hobbyists, educators, and for-profit aquaponic producers.
The survey's questions should take about 20 minutes to complete. Your responses will be kept confidential and any data collected will be presented in aggregate form to ensure anonymity. If you have any questions or wish to provide additional feedback, please do so in the comments section at the end of the survey.
The information you share with SFAAS will be used to develop targeted research, teaching, and extension efforts to support the needs of the aquaponics industry.

The Artemis Global Ag Report will gather industry insights around challenges and opportunities for the farming industry as in past years, however, this next survey will be open to all specialty crop cultivators—across international, enterprise, indoor/outdoor, hemp and cannabis operations. We decided to expand the scope of the survey and report to deepen its value and utility as a resource for our industry.
The survey is open for submissions starting today Wednesday, August 21 and will close Tuesday, October 15. The survey takes about 15 minutes to complete, and the 2019 report will be released later this year.

The Census seeks to understand the scale and nature of Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA) to better determine the roadblocks to accelerating the industry. This includes greenhouses, vertical farms, indoor rooms and hoop or tunnel houses.
Both Agritecture and Autogrow believe a great deal of CEA activity worldwide is not well documented, with data being fragmented and often unreliable, making it difficult to provide support or solutions on a larger scale.
“We do a lot of work with city leaders around the world and the conversations are about how the infrastructure needs to be in place in order to use new technology, drive costs down and operate sustainably. Through the Census we hope to highlight who is growing, what they’re growing, where they are growing and what they need to take it to the next level,” notes Agritecture Founder Henry Gordon-Smith.
“Based on that information both Autogrow and Agritecture can then work closer with governments, growers and city planners on where they can focus their efforts and utilize valuable resources.”
One of the biggest known roadblocks to adoption of new technology today is internet connection on the farm. Without connectivity growers are unable to join the growing trend of cloud-based software and remote access.
Autogrow CEO, Darryn Keiller says “We need to understand whether growers are ready for innovation, and if they aren’t, how we can get them there.”
“New crop production technologies are heavily reliant on growers having multi-modal internet to the farm and commercial grade onsite network infrastructure. If this isn’t addressed, and supported at a government level, then we will see an ever widening ‘digital divide’ at the farm level.”
“All the best technology in the world is of no use if it can’t be connected to the farm.”
Additionally, the Census hopes to record best practice solutions to share across the industry.
“There are some amazing growers around the world who are using creative solutions for things like water usage, labor shortages, energy consumption or improved marketing activities using social media. We want to capture that and share to the wider community. Only by banding together can we hope to push our industry forward in a positive way,” explains Henry.
The Census will run until 22 July with a report on the findings published in September. All submissions will remain confidential and only anonymized data will be reported.

Software solutions provider Agrilyst has launched their third annual State of Indoor Farming Survey.
This survey will give Agrilyst and growers insight on emerging trends and challenges in the greenhouse and vertical farming industries.
Last year, Agrilyst received over 150 responses from indoor farmers in the US. The 2017 report shared insight on the benefits and challenges for growers. According to the report, 25 per cent of growers said that their biggest challenge was capital - from access to working capital and expansion capital to cost of production. Even though they faced these challenges, 51 per cent of growers reported operating profitably.
Allison Kopf, CEO of Agrilyst said, "this year we are digging even further into the costs of operating an indoor farm. We hope that the report will give everyone insight on the industry and help new growers get up and running faster." The company aims to expand their survey participants to growers in Canada.
